The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL is part of the ETH Domain. Approximately 600 people work on the sustainable use and protection of the environment and on the handling of natural hazards.

The Land Change Science research unit analyzes and assesses short‐ and long‐term changes in natural resources in built, managed, and semi‑natural landscapes. The Land‑Use Systems group offers a tenure track position for a Scientist in «Integrated landscape management».

Global change and its effects on climate, ecosystems, economy, and populations pose major challenges for land use and the provision of associated services. This role focuses on integrative spatial modelling of land‑use systems and landscapes, and on decision support for sustainable landscape management.

Responsibilities include developing innovative theoretical and practical concepts, methods, and applications; initiating internationally recognised research activities; acquiring necessary funding through collaboration with internal and external scientific partners and stakeholders; and publishing scientific articles.

Key qualifications:

  • Doctorate in geography, landscape ecology, environmental sciences or a related field.
  • Several years of experience researching land‑use systems.
  • Expertise in integrative spatial modelling and decision support in transdisciplinary processes.
  • Innovative, motivated, creative, reliable, and capable of working independently and within a team.
  • Strong oral and written English skills; experience in writing and publishing scientific articles.
  • Knowledge of German or another national language is required; a good command of German and, ideally, another local language is also required.

Applications are accepted via the WSL website; email applications will not be considered. Contact Beatrice Lamprecht, Human Resources WSL, for submission. For additional information, contact Matthias Bürgi, Head of Research Unit (matthias.buergi).

WSL is committed to diversity and inclusion as core values, actively promotes gender equality, and fosters an open, inclusive work environment.
