Position: Scientist in ecological modelling and analysis 80 - 100% (f/m/d)
Location: Birmensdorf

Overview

This project aims to map species distributions in Switzerland under contemporary and projected future climatic conditions using the modelling pipeline N‑SDM. The work involves interacting with Info Flora and Info Fauna to assemble species data suitable for modelling, predicting the spatial distribution of thousands of plant and animal species in Switzerland, and optimizing the pipeline in collaboration with modelling experts and responding to comments from plant and animal specialists.

Additionally, indicators will be derived from these maps and feasibility of projecting the Swiss Habitat Map into future climate conditions will be tested.

Responsibilities
  • Interact with Info Flora and Info Fauna to assemble species data suitable for modelling.
  • Predict spatial distribution of thousands of plant and animal species in Switzerland using the N‑SDM pipeline.
  • Optimize the pipeline together with modelling experts in the consortium, responding to comments and input from plant and animal experts.
  • Derive indicators from the maps and test feasibility of projecting the Swiss Habitat Map into future climate conditions.
Qualifications
  • PhD degree in ecology or a related field.
  • Strong skills in macroecology, statistical ecology, processing and analysis of high‑volume ecological data, spatial modelling, and coding with R/Python/GIT.
  • Experience with species distribution modelling, specifically with the N‑SDM pipeline.
  • Ability to develop new ideas independently, with excellent English written and oral skills.
  • Curious, self‑reliant, excellent team worker who values cooperation.
