Head Coach - Speech Job Summary

Responsible for the overall supervision of the speech activity program.

Qualifications
  • Valid Minnesota coaching certificate or 60–hour equivalency.
    • The MSHSL provides the MN Head Coaches Course to help meet this requirement.
    • This 7‑hour in‑person course plus additional online components total 60 clock‑hours.
  • Strong work ethic and dedication to co‑curricular activities.
  • Leadership skills: organization, vision, motivation, conflict resolution; ability to work with student athletes, parents, staff, and community.
  • Substantial knowledge of the rules and technical aspects of cheerleading.
  • Substantial knowledge of Minnesota High School League rules.
  • Ability to lift and move objects weighing 10+ pounds regularly.
  • Preference for a strong background in speech as a participant and/or coach.
Responsible to
  • The Activities Director, who provides overall objectives in conjunction with the High School Principal.
Supervises
  • The athletes in his/her activity in grades 7‑12 in conjunction with the Athletic Director and respective Principal.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Coach at varsity and junior varsity levels.
  • Start and end the season according to Minnesota State High School League rules or local modifications.
  • Knowledge and implementation of the District Athletic Policies.
  • Knowledge of existing state and league regulations.
  • Staff Responsibilities
  • Follow the fundamental philosophy, skills and techniques to be taught by staff.
  • Maintain discipline, address grievances, and increase morale and cooperation.
  • Perform additional duties assigned by the Activities Director.
  • Administrative Duties
  • Prepare for scheduled sporting events or practices and adhere to facility time.
  • Ensure all participants submit proper forms before practice.
  • Lead recommendations for new policy, method, or procedural changes.
  • Provide safeguards for maintenance and protection of team equipment.
  • Student Responsibilities
  • Provide training rules and unique regulations to each athlete.
  • Monitor student grades and conduct.
  • Offer assistance, guidance, and safeguards at all games, practices, and travel.
  • Follow injury, medical, and emergency procedures.
  • Complete injury paperwork on proper forms and submit to the athletic office within 24 hours (or Monday following Friday or Saturday contests).
  • Direct student managers.
  • Finance, Equipment and Facilities
  • Permit athletes only to authorized areas at appropriate times.
  • Examine locker rooms before and after practice and games; maintain cleanliness of specific sports equipment.
  • Secure all doors and lights before leaving the building if custodians are not on duty.
  • Instill respect for equipment and school property.
  • Ensure proper setup and upkeep of sports facilities.
  • Maintain neat and orderly storage areas.
  • Public Relations
  • Promote the sport within the school through recruiting athletes not on other sports and outside the school via news media, Sports Boosters, or other feasible means.
  • Maintain good public relations with news media, Booster Club, officials, parents, community, volunteers, and fans.
  • Additional Responsibilities
  • Attend MSHSL rules interpretation meetings.
  • Hold preseason parent/athlete meeting.
  • Attend annual coaching meetings and training.
  • Hold end‑of‑season awards banquet.
