Join to apply for the Help incarcerated people at the DeKalb County Jail read to their children role at Companions Journeying Together
.
Companions Journeying Together provides programs of compassion for incarcerated people & their families in Illinois. We are perhaps most well known for our Aunt Mary's Storybook program which connects people in custody with the children most important to them through reading and literacy.
We also coordinate pen-pal groups and facilitate Christmas Cards, Mother's Day Cards, and Birthday Cards for justice-involved people.
Aunt Mary's Storybook, a project of Companions Journeying Together, is looking for a compassionate volunteer to help bring joy and connection to families separated by incarceration. This particular role operates within the DeKalb County Jail in Sycamore.
Our MissionWe provide incarcerated individuals with a selection of age-appropriate books and audio recorders, assisting them in choosing the perfect book for the children they love. The participants are then given the opportunity to record themselves reading these books, and our organization sends the books and heartfelt recordings to the children.
Volunteer RoleWe're seeking a volunteer to join us on a monthly basis (the first Friday of each month, from 10 AM to 1 PM) at the DeKalb County Jail.
- Help incarcerated people choose books that will resonate with the children most important to them (their own children, stepchildren, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, etc.)
- Assist with the recording sessions capturing these special moments on a digital audio recorder
- Work alongside an existing, experienced volunteer, learning the ropes and making a difference
- Open-mindedness:
Someone open to working with diverse and justice-involved populations, embracing the chance to make a positive impact. - Flexibility: A volunteer who's adaptable to changing schedules or session cancellations due to facility circumstances (e.g., lockdowns).
- Relevant Experience (Preferred, but Not Required):
Previous experience in education, teaching, reading, literacy, tutoring, public speaking, social work, or related skills/abilities and initiatives. - Positive Disposition: A calm and cool exterior, positive demeanor, and the ability to deal with multiple differing personalities, creating a supportive and encouraging environment.
- Background check:
Willingness to undergo a background check.
As part of Aunt Mary's Storybook, you'll be actively involved in creating lasting memories and fostering connections between incarcerated people and the children important to them. Your contribution will have a significant impact on families, providing comfort and love across the miles.
