Paramedics provide out‑of‑hospital emergency medical care and transportation by ambulance for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical services (EMS) system. Paramedics use Advanced Life Support knowledge and skills necessary to stabilize and safely transport patients ranging from non‑emergency and routine medical transports to life‑threatening emergencies.

• Respond to assignments as directed and update unit status as required.
• Assess the patient’s nature and extent of illness or injury to establish and prioritize medical procedures in accordance with New York State Department of Health Guidelines.
• Administer first‑aid treatment or Advanced Life Support care to sick or injured persons in prehospital settings.
• Coordinate or interact professionally with partners, patients, public safety personnel, colleagues, and hospital emergency staff to facilitate care delivery.
• Communicate with dispatchers, medical control, or treatment‑center personnel to provide information about the situation, arrange reception of patients, or receive instructions for further treatment.
• Write a comprehensive report documenting the situation at the scene, physical exam, orders received, treatments rendered, response to these treatments, and other pertinent information.
• Complete a check of vehicle equipment and systems, and complete the manifest at the start of tour. Ensure competent operation of all equipment and systems and report needed repairs to supervisor.
• Ensure the ambulance complies with 10 NYCRR 800 and Departmental policies.
• Safeguard and maintain Department equipment and property.
• Operate Department vehicles in accordance with New York State Vehicle and Traffic Laws and Department policies.
• Attend training classes to maintain certification licensure, keep abreast of new developments in the field, or maintain existing knowledge.
• Perform medical histories and physical exams as indicated for patients in the field.

• High School degree or equivalent, required.
• Driver’s license valid in New York State (current and without violations).
• Current NYS DOH EMT‑Paramedic certification.
• Current New York City REMAC Paramedic certification.
• Must meet the criteria for NYS DOH Functional Description for qualifications, competencies, and tasks (EMT‑Paramedic).
• 1–3 years of relevant experience, required.
