Overview

After School Arts Instructor - Part Time at YMCA of Central New York. The position supports the mission and work of the Y, a leading nonprofit organization, by working in after school programs at a designated school. Arts instruction teaches the principles of art education in the given genre of the class. The instructor ensures the well-being of each participant in line with YMCA of the USA guidelines and association policies.

Position

Summary

The After School Arts Instructor is part of a team working in after school programs. This role involves delivering arts instruction, promoting youth development, and maintaining a safe, engaging classroom environment per YMCA policies.

Responsibilities
  • Models the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
  • Develops and maintains positive relationships with individuals and groups at all levels of the organization; supports members in connecting with each other and the YMCA.
  • Maintains physical presence and remains alert while on duty.
  • Knows and follows all emergency procedures and responds to emergencies in accordance with YMCA policies; completes related reports as required.
  • Develops and implements arts lessons that increase knowledge of arts principles and expand students’ interest in art.
  • Ensures the safety of all students.
  • Maintains the cleanliness and organization of classroom spaces.
  • Communicates respectfully and clearly with students, administrators, and parents.
  • Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, procedures, and staff expectations, including child abuse prevention.
  • Actively represents YMCA programs with a focus on department offerings and member engagement.
  • Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available; cleans and stores equipment per branch procedures.
  • Attends mandatory meetings and trainings.
  • Willing to contribute to the overall success of the YMCA, even if outside of the position description.

Requirements Experience, Education, and Qualifications
  • A college degree related to the position’s arts field, or a comparable degree of demonstrable professional experience in the relevant arts genre (performance, teaching, exhibitions, etc.).
  • Prior experience working directly with elementary-age students in an art education environment.
  • Excellent organizational, verbal and written communication, interpersonal, decision-making, problem-solving, and leadership skills.
  • Strong experience and skills in the relevant field of fine arts.
  • Ability to work both within a team and independently.
  • Ability to develop and implement meaningful and creative lesson plans appropriate for the targeted age group.
Trainings & Certifications
  • Must complete annual safety, harassment prevention, and child abuse prevention trainings assigned by human resources prior to direct service.
  • Must have current CPR and First Aid certification.
Physical Requirements
  • Prolonged periods of standing and frequent bending.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at a time.
  • Exposure to illness-causing bacteria and viruses.
Work Environment

This job operates in a recreational and/or educational environment. Employees may be exposed to standard recreation/office equipment and to conditions such as noise, infectious diseases, and risk of injury from others. All employees must follow the YMCA’s preventative health policies. The work environment noise level is moderate to high.
