Position: Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Technician
Location: City of Syracuse

Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Technician

The Syracuse Combined Cycle Plant in Solvay, NY, is a 103 MW facility with a Siemens V64.3 combustion turbine, a Deltak three‑drum HRSG, and an Ansaldo steam turbine. This role may also support the Beaver Falls Generating Facility (107 MW, 1x1 combined‑cycle dual‑fuel cogeneration plant). Both plants provide reliable power and support New York’s industrial operations.

Opportunity Summary

The O&M Technician will manage startup, shutdown, and routine operation of combustion turbines, HRSGs, steam turbines, and balanced‑of‑plant equipment. Primary duties include equipment inspections, minor repairs, system monitoring, safety compliance, documentation in the CMMS, and support of maintenance activities to promote reliable, efficient plant performance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate combustion turbine, HRSG, steam turbine, and auxiliary systems (air compressors, lubrication, cooling water, fuel handling, water treatment).
  • Conduct equipment rounds and operational checks; adjust systems to maintain proper performance.
  • Assist in lockout/tagout, basic disassembly, cleaning, and inspection during maintenance.
  • Maintain accurate logs of system parameters, equipment conditions, and abnormalities.
  • Recognize and report unsafe or abnormal conditions; take basic corrective actions.
  • Support maintenance tasks—lubrication, gasket/filter replacements, component adjustments.
  • Enter work requests and maintenance data into the CMMS.
  • Perform preventive and basic corrective maintenance with attention to detail.
  • Monitor operating parameters (temperature, vibration, pressure, flow, fluid levels).
  • Detect leaks, noise, excessive vibration, and other early signs of mechanical issues.
  • Assist in troubleshooting mechanistic equipment under guidance.
  • Carry out additional duties assigned by Plant Manager or senior staff.
Safety

All employees must remain alert, work safely, and follow NAES safety rules, warnings, and posted signs. Safety compliance is a key performance indicator.

Working Relationships

The technician reports directly to the Plant Manager and coordinates with all plant personnel to ensure safe, reliable operations.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

Stand, climb stairs and ladders, use elevated platforms, lift up to 50 lb, enter confined spaces, endure chemical exposure, heat, and noise. Protective equipment may include hard hats, safety glasses, masks, ear protection, flame‑resistant clothing, and fall protection. Smoking is prohibited.

Fitness for Duty

Participation in the Fitness for Duty Program, including post‑offer physical examination and drug screening.

Work Schedule

Standard Monday‑Friday day shift with occasional extended hours, flexible shifts, weekends, holidays, and on‑call requirements. Periodic travel to Beaver Falls as needed.

Compensation

$39–$44 per hour plus an annual performance bonus.

Core

Qualifications & Skills
  • High school diploma or equivalent; associate degree in power‑plant technology or related field preferred.
  • Experience operating and maintaining combustion turbines, auxiliary systems, and combined‑cycle gas turbines.
  • Operational knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems; ability to support troubleshooting and maintenance.
  • Familiarity with gas and steam turbine principles, CEMS, electrical systems, control systems, and P&.
  • Reading and interpreting technical documentation: blueprints, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
  • Knowledge of LOTO, OSHA, and environmental compliance.
  • Team collaboration, communication with supervisors, contractors, and vendors.
  • Basic math and technical problem‑solving skills.
  • Valid, unrestricted U.S. driver’s license.

  • Intermediate proficiency in Power Plant Fundamentals, Power Generation, CMMS, Computer Skills, Verbal & Written Communications, Water Chemistry, Safety Policies, Power Plant Operations, Safety Statutes, O&M, Combined Cycle, Mechanical Maintenance, Mechanical Aptitude.
  • Innovative; functional expert; team player behaviors.
  • Technical training in Power Plant Technology or related field; high school or better.
