Planned Parenthood of Central and Western New York (PPCWNY) protects and provides health care and education that empowers individuals and families, without judgment.
In support of PPCWNY’s mission, the Registered Nurse (RN) will provide direct clinical care through a number of programs ranging from family planning to surgical services, ensuring patients receive timely professional services. The RN plans, directs and evaluates total nursing care for the treatment of women from puberty throughout the life cycle in addition to male services. Duties also include performing routine laboratory testing, such as blood drawings.
Responsibilities- Accurately record data in the electronic health record regarding the patient’s health history, including obstetric, gynecologic, contraceptive, medical, surgical, family health and psychosocial backgrounds.
- Perform routine vital signs and lab tests such as weight, blood pressure, urine, hemoglobin, pregnancy test and venipunctures as necessary.
- Discuss pregnancy options with women in an objective, unbiased manner and offer appropriate referrals and description of services.
- Duplicate labels for contraceptive pills according to written orders in the chart.
- Assume legal responsibility in conjunction with PPFA for proper ordering, handling and distribution of medications and supplies in compliance with State and Federal laws and appropriate orders from the assigned clinician.
- Perform routine injections as directed by clinician.
- Assist providers with abortion procedures and act as support to the patient.
- Sterilize instruments.
- Monitor patients in the recovery room.
- Set up and clean procedure and utility rooms.
- Maintain appropriate stock of supplies in exam rooms.
- Perform quality controls as directed.
- Provide information and counseling on reproductive services; abortions, sterilization, as well as family planning methods: oral contraceptives, IUCs, diaphragms, cervical caps, condoms, vaginal spermicide, sponges, natural family planning, etc.; coordinate follow‑up visits with clinicians as needed.
- Provide information and counseling in areas of health maintenance and reproductive care such as nutrition, infertility, sexuality, family planning, breast self‑awareness, menopause, HIV antibody testing and safe sex techniques.
- Learn and use information about how the needs of diverse patients can be sensitively met.
- Participate in the quality improvement program; follow up and report all complications to the CQRM department.
- Accept individual and joint responsibility for, participate in, and work to achieve productivity, customer service, and capacity goals as set by PPCWNY.
- Participate in the orientation of new health center nurses, providing observational experience for medical and nursing students; may assist with nursing staff orientation and in‑service education.
- Stock rooms and ensure that needed supplies and equipment are on hand; contact the appropriate person(s) before supplies of any kind are depleted.
- Participate in affiliate initiatives.
- Work on other projects as assigned by the Health Center Manager, Director of Patient Services or the Medical Director.
- Perform and/or consult on projects/studies as needed.
- Maintain an awareness of the organization’s projects/initiatives as outlined in the annual plan and participate, as appropriate.
- Act as the resource contact for distribution of information or ordering of equipment or supplies.
- Show respect for patients and co‑workers for differences in backgrounds, lifestyles, viewpoints and needs.
- Practical Nursing Completion, Diploma, or associate's degree in nursing; BSN preferred.
- One year of nursing experience preferred.
- Experience with GYN care highly desirable.
- RN with current New York State license.
