Downtown Committee of Syracuse Inc. is a downtown management organization whose purpose is to improve downtown's image, strengthen its economic base, increase its attractiveness, and assure that it is clean, safe, and accessible.

The primary focus of the security officer is to patrol downtown Syracuse and keep it safe. The officer is responsible for a walking beat in the community and responding to requests for assistance from businesses and the public. Police experience, particularly in community policing, and public relations skills are required. Retired police officers are encouraged to apply. Hours are primarily evening and/or weekend hours with potential for shift additions during the daytime.

Officers must represent the Downtown Committee of Syracuse in a professional manner at all times.

Reports to: The Director of Security

• Physically, mentally and emotionally stable and act in a professional manner at all times
• In good physical condition to carry out foot patrol duties
• Able to assist store owners and Police to restrain or take individuals into custody to protect others and themselves
• May be first responder to crimes in progress or disputes, able to diffuse conflict and intervene physically when necessary
• Can detect suspicious or possible criminal activity and notify Police
• Friendly and courteous to business owners, workers, and visitors to the downtown area
• Successfully comply with firearms qualifications, secure a valid pistol permit, and understand and comply with NYS Penal Law and Criminal Procedures Law use of deadly force regulations

Responsible, self-motivated individual with experience in community policing. A valid NYS Driver's License and good driving record required. Must comply with dress code, criminal background check, drug and alcohol testing. Experience with Syracuse Police Department, Onondaga County Sheriff Department or other municipal Police department preferred.

Hourly base rate is $31.50 per hour for day-time shifts. Differential rates:

• Evening shift additional $3.50 per hour on top of base rate
• Weekend shift additional $5.50 per hour on top of base rate

The security officer patrols an 82-block district of Downtown Syracuse. The position requires extensive outdoor work within the downtown area. Downtown Syracuse is an urban and culturally diverse environment and is the daytime population center for Onondaga County.
