We are a YMCA focused on strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility, guided by core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. This role supports members in pursuing health and wellness goals by delivering safe, engaging group exercise programs in the Group Exercise, Mind/Body and/or Cycle Studio.
Responsibilities/Duties/Functions/Tasks- Deliver and lead a safe and effective Group Exercise program(s).
- Maintain current certifications when instructing at the YMCA.
- Model YMCA character values and adhere to program policies in and out of the studio.
- Plan routines following standards set by the National YMCA, including warm-up, cool down, class structure, and music selection.
- Lead group exercise classes in accordance with YMCA guidelines; modify programs to meet varied wellness levels.
- Maintain attendance records and keep abreast of health and wellness information and trends.
- Educate members on health and wellness issues and trends.
- Obtain substitutes from the provided sub list as needed.
- Review and enforce Health & Wellness policies; ensure a safe, fun, and effective workout.
- Respond appropriately to incidents, accidents, and emergencies; protect the organization and members from harm.
- Perform routine studio maintenance, ensure equipment is put away properly, and report maintenance needs.
- Administer proper first aid and CPR/AED in accordance with training and procedures.
- Follow Health & Wellness rules on and off duty; keep up to date with the Group Exercise Training Manual.
- Attend mandatory trainings and meetings.
- Be on time, prepared, and dress appropriately per Department Director guidelines.
- Greet members warmly, encourage progress, and promote next classes.
- Foster a respectful, supportive, and collaborative team environment.
- Assist with promotions related to Health & Wellness and support newly hired instructors.
- Take attendance, communicate clearly, and respond to member questions in a timely, courteous manner.
- Demonstrate teamwork and coordinate with the Department Director on issues.
- Contribute to member experience by providing information about available program offerings.
- Make members feel comfortable and welcome; learn and use members’ names; facilitate connection among members and staff.
- Listen to member suggestions and concerns; help members set and reach goals.
- Be passionate about impacting the health and well-being of members and the community.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Experience in a health and wellness-related field preferred.
- Must be at least 18 years old to work in the Wellness Department.
- Demonstrate leadership, effective communication, planning and organizational skills.
- Ability to lead and motivate others; build positive relationships with Members, Directors and Staff.
- Avoid diagnosing injuries or dispensing medical advice; do not endorse unapproved health products.
- Flexible availability, including some weekends and holidays.
- Complete online Bloodborne Pathogens, Employee Safety and Youth Protection Series trainings before assignment.
- Maintain current CPR, AED, and Oxygen Administration certifications or complete within 30 days of employment.
- Complete online Hazard Communication training within 90 days.
- Complete Health & Wellness trainings within 90 days:
Orientation to Healthy Living at the Y;
Foundations of Listen First;
Principles of Member Health & Wellness;
Wellness Center At The Y. - Active certification in Group Exercise (national or YMCA Foundations) required while teaching.
- Ability to demonstrate exercises, communicate clearly, and perform class motions for up to 60 minutes in a loud environment.
- Regular standing, walking, and ability to lift up to 45 pounds; readiness for emergencies requiring fast action.
- Occasional exposure to outdoor conditions and cleaning solutions typical of YMCA facilities.
