Role Context

The Senior Planner provides strategic schedule leadership throughout the project lifecycle, from baseline development through construction completion and close-out. The position ensures that engineering, procurement, construction, testing, commissioning, and handover activities are logically sequenced, properly resourced, and aligned with contractual milestones. Working with project management, cost engineering, contractors, designers, and client representatives, the Senior Planner identifies schedule threats, evaluates performance trends, and develops practical mitigation or recovery strategies.

The role also provides technical guidance to junior planners and supports executive decisions with accurate, evidence-based schedule information.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the preparation and maintenance of fully integrated Master Project Schedules.
  • Develop detailed baseline programmes using Primavera P6 and approved scheduling procedures.
  • Define activity logic, relationships, calendars, constraints, durations, and project milestones.
  • Confirm that engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and handover activities are correctly sequenced.
  • Review contractor schedules for technical quality, contractual compliance, and achievable delivery logic.
  • Perform advanced Critical Path Method analysis.
  • Identify critical and near-critical activities that may affect programme completion.
  • Conduct schedule variance analysis against approved baselines.
  • Evaluate actual progress, remaining duration, productivity, and forecast completion dates.
  • Perform forensic delay analysis when required to understand the causes and impacts of slippage.
  • Develop recovery schedules and acceleration strategies for delayed work packages.
  • Assess contractor mitigation proposals and confirm whether planned measures are realistic.
  • Conduct quantitative schedule risk analysis to evaluate uncertainty around key milestones.
  • Maintain schedule risk registers and recommend practical mitigation actions.
  • Coordinate with cost engineering teams to align schedules with budgets and financial milestones.
  • Support resource loading, cost loading, and earned value management integration.
  • Review planned value, earned value, schedule performance, and productivity indicators.
  • Ensure schedule information supports project cash flow forecasts and management reporting.
  • Facilitate planning workshops with clients, contractors, consultants, and engineering teams.
  • Obtain stakeholder agreement on sequencing, interfaces, access requirements, and key dates.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary planning inputs across civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, and utility scopes.
  • Review technical drawings, specifications, and construction methodologies to validate planned sequencing.
  • Identify unrealistic logic, missing scope, interface gaps, and resource conflicts.
  • Monitor contractor milestones and elevate emerging schedule risks promptly.
  • Prepare weekly and monthly schedule updates and progress reports.
  • Develop executive dashboards, milestone summaries, variance reports, and performance presentations.
  • Explain complex schedule data clearly to non technical stakeholders.
  • Maintain accurate schedule narratives, assumptions, progress records, and change histories.
  • Support assessment of extension of time requests and contractor delay submissions.
  • Provide schedule evidence for contractual reviews, claims analysis, and commercial decisions.
  • Use Microsoft Project when required for supplementary schedules and management plans.
  • Apply Tilos for linear scheduling or Acumen Fuse for schedule quality analysis where available.
  • Review schedule quality against recognized planning and controls practices.
  • Mentor junior planners and review their schedules, reports, and analyses.
  • Establish consistent planning methods, templates, coding structures, and reporting cycles.
  • Encourage accountability and timely progress reporting across delivery teams.
  • Manage multiple high priority planning tasks without compromising accuracy.
  • Support project leadership with strategic advice on programme risk and delivery options.
  • Perform additional planning and project controls responsibilities assigned by management.
