Heavy Equipment Operator I - (260000CG)

Salary: $47,424 - $71,110

Incumbents in this position operate a wide variety of heavy equipment on maintenance projects for city streets, parks and utilities such as: single and double axle dump trucks and boom trucks; street sweepers; loaders; backhoes and snow plows. Some positions may require availability for 24‑hour snow calls.

Essential Functions And Responsibilities
  • Drives and operates single and double axle trucks, rubber tired and skid steer loaders, boom trucks and roll offs. Incidentally drives and operates trash trucks (rear and side loader), street sweepers and super suckers.
  • Loads and unloads materials and equipment.
  • Operates snow plow and salt spreader to maintain streets.
  • Loads materials into other vehicles.
  • Compacts dirt.
  • Grades and levels ball fields.
  • Digs up asphalt and concrete.
  • Performs pre-trip inspections on vehicles and equipment.
  • Maintains department vehicles and equipment.
  • May perform welding.
  • May perform manual labor on projects.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Data Utilization:
    Requires the ability to process, calculate, compute, summate, and/or tabulate data and/or information.
  • Human Interaction:
    Requires the ability to explain, demonstrate and clarify to others, such as co‑workers and the general public, within well‑established policies, procedures and standards. Ability to follow specific instructions and respond to simple requests from supervisors.
  • Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Use:
    Requires the ability to operate equipment and machinery requiring monitoring of multiple conditions and making multiple, complex and rapid adjustments, such as, street sweepers, loaders, backhoes, double axle dump trucks, tank trucks, cement mixers, flushers, snow plows, hydraulic/air vacuums, and other department equipment. Ability to operate complex equipment and perform machinery general maintenance.
  • Verbal Aptitude:
    Requires the ability to utilize a variety of reference data and information such as work orders, operating instructions and schedules.
  • Mathematical Aptitude:
    Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Functional Reasoning:
    Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form. Ability to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.
  • Situational Reasoning:
    Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria.
  • Environmental Factors:
    Tasks may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents and traffic hazards.
Qualifications

One year of experience in the operation of heavy and specialized automotive equipment. OR successful completion of a Commercial Driver’s License training program. OR, an equivalent combination of training and experience.

License

Incumbents must possess and maintain a valid Missouri Commercial Driver’s License (Class A or

B) while employed by the City of St. Louis. Candidates that have a CDL permit at the time of hire must obtain a valid CDL (Class A or

B) as a condition of successfully completing their working test period. Some positions may require incumbents to possess a Class A CDL before completion of their working test period. Please note type of license, number, class, expiration date and State where issued on the Employment Application.

Proof of successful completion of a CDL training program (if applicable) must be provided upon request.
