Incumbents in this position operate a wide variety of heavy equipment on maintenance projects for city streets, parks and utilities such as: double and single axle dump trucks, flushers, street sweepers, cement trucks, loaders, backhoes, snow plows, cranes and other department equipment.

Essential Functions And Responsibilities
  • Drives heavy, specialized vehicles and related equipment.
  • Conducts pre-trip and post trip inspections.
  • Washes and fuels vehicles.
  • Sweeps and flushes streets.
  • Delivers concrete and emulsion.
  • Removes snow and spreads salt.
  • Lines, streets and intersections.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Data Utilization:
    Requires the ability to process, calculate, compute, summate, and/or tabulate data and/or information.
  • Human Interaction:
    Requires the ability to explain, demonstrate and clarify to others, such as co-workers and the general public, within well-established policies, procedures and standards. Ability to follow specific instructions and respond to simple requests from supervisors.
  • Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Use:
    Requires the ability to operate equipment and machinery requiring monitoring multiple conditions and making multiple, complex and rapid adjustments, such as on automated refuse dump trucks, roll off container trucks, boom trucks, packer trucks, and front-end loaders.
  • Verbal Aptitude:
    Requires the ability to utilize a variety of reference data and information such as work orders, operating instructions and schedules.
  • Mathematical Aptitude:
    Requires the ability to perform addition and subtraction.
  • Functional Reasoning:
    Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form. Ability to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.
  • Situational Reasoning:
    Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria.
  • Environmental Factors:
    Tasks may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents and traffic hazards.
  • Physical Requirements:

    Tasks may involve the ability to exert heavy physical effort typically involving some combination of lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling moderately heavy objects and materials weighing up to fifty (50) pounds, occasionally involving objects such as bulky materials up to one hundred (100) pounds. Tasks require the ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, balance, bend, and climb in order to perform equipment operation and manual labor duties.
  • Sensory Requirements:
    Requires the ability to recognize and identify similarities or differences between characteristics of sound, odor, and materials associated with the operation of equipment and manual labor.
Other Requirements
  • Some positions may require shifts, weekend, and holiday assignments.
  • These positions require availability for 24-hour snow call.

Two years of experience in the operation of heavy and specialized automotive equipment. Successful completion of a Commercial Driver's License training program may substitute for one year of the required experience.
OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

License

Incumbents must possess and maintain a valid Missouri Commercial Driver's License (Class A or

B) while employed by the City of St. Louis. Candidates that have a CDL permit at the time of hire must obtain a valid CDL (Class A or

B) as a condition of successfully completing their working test period. Some positions may require incumbents to possess a Class A CDL before completion of their working test period. Please note type of license, number, class, expiration date and State where issued on the Employment Application.
