This position instructs middle school athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success. The employee must understand and abide by all building, Tacoma School District and Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) policies, regulations, procedures and guidelines.
Essential Job Functions- Supervise student athletes to promote effective student learning through participation in athletic activities.
- Plan, develop and implement an effective program for the sport, preparing athletes physically and mentally for competition, establishing behavioral objectives, administering discipline, emphasizing safety, providing opportunities for success, and communicating with parents.
- Organize and conduct practice sessions: 7th and 8th grade teams four days a week, 6th grade teams two days a week, immediately after school.
- Coordinate facility use with the building athletic director, handle budgeting, equipment purchase, injury procedures, and maintain injury records.
- Inform students and parents of eligibility and special rules, post rules, and issue them to participants.
- Maintain equipment inventory, conduct weekly safety checks, ensure return of equipment, and complete inventories.
- Make written recommendations to the building and district athletic directors regarding program, facilities, and transportation issues.
- Attend district and building athletic meetings as required.
- Update knowledge by attending clinics, workshops, and staying current with WIAA and district rule changes.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Work on outdoor fields, indoor/outdoor courts, gymnasium, swimming pool or other facilities; physical ability to lift and move sports equipment; may be exposed to infectious diseases and inclement weather.
Minimum Qualifications- High school graduate or equivalent, with a minimum of two years as an assistant coach.
- At least 21 years of age (WIAA regulation) or equivalent experience and training.
- First Aid Certificate and CPR card required.
- Knowledge of building, Tacoma School District, and WIAA policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of effective coaching practices for cross country.
- Ability to comply with WIAA coaching standards and motivate students.
- Ability to exercise fairness, conduct ethically, maintain poise, relate to students of differing abilities, build relationships in a multicultural setting, plan and coordinate activities, and maintain accurate records.
