Enterprise Safety Manager (Unclassified, Non-Represented)
The City of Tacoma seeks an experienced and strategic Enterprise Safety Manager to oversee the Enterprise Safety Division, serve as a city-wide safety consultant, and provide subject‑matter expertise on enterprise‑wide safety initiatives.
Key Responsibilities- Leadership and Supervision: Provide leadership and oversight to department, division, and section leaders; supervise staff, manage project assignments, conduct performance evaluations, coordinate training, and oversee hiring and disciplinary processes.
- Division/Section Management Support: Assist in managing the Safety Management System at all levels, contributing to strategic planning, operational decision‑making, and performance monitoring.
- Program and Operations Management: Develop, implement, and manage assigned programs, operational processes, and special initiatives.
- Project Management: Lead multiple complex, high‑impact projects, define goals and timelines, coordinate cross‑functional teams, and manage budgets.
- Performance and Policy Oversight: Oversee development and implementation of performance metrics; evaluate policies, procedures, and regulations for effectiveness and compliance.
- Strategic and Departmental Planning: Support city‑wide strategic initiatives, set operational objectives, and develop long‑term strategies aligned with organizational priorities.
- Financial Management: Participate in budget development, procurement, and expenditure monitoring; authorize expenditures and ensure fiscal accountability.
- Analytical and Strategic Initiatives: Lead or contribute to complex analytical projects; analyze data to identify trends, develop actionable recommendations, present findings to senior leadership, and support process improvements.
- Environmental & Occupational Health and Safety:
- Develop and implement safety standards and procedures.
- Design programs to reduce workplace incidents and occupational illnesses.
- Conduct risk assessments and inspections to identify hazards.
- Provide targeted safety training to employees and supervisors.

- Bachelor’s degree in safety or related field.
- 6 years of experience administering health, safety, or loss‑prevention programs, including 1 year in a senior supervisory role.
- Washington State driver’s license.
- Equivalency: 1 year of experience equals 1 year of education.
- Professional certifications: CSP, CHSM, CIH, CHMM, or equivalent.
- Experience managing utility safety systems.
- Master’s degree in occupational health and safety or related field.
- Strong critical thinking, planning, and problem‑solving skills.
- Collaborative leadership style and experience managing enterprise‑level safety programs.
