Position Summary

Under the direction of the Director, the Associate Director of Campus Public Safety works to establish safety protocols, policy, and operational standards. The primary responsibility of this position is to manage/supervise the Campus Public Safety Officers. The Associate Director will also assume the responsibilities of the Executive Director of Campus Public Safety in that Director’s absence. This position will be expected to work a flexible assignment that may include emergency call outs, nights and weekends, and on-call when needed.

The Associate Director will offer psychological safety and a sense of welcomeness for our diverse students on both TCC campuses - Tacoma and Gig Harbor.

Responsibilities To Campus Public Safety Director
  • Assumes the responsibilities of the Executive Director of Campus Public Safety in that person’s absence and provides support to other areas of administration within the department as needed.
  • Ensures management is kept apprised of critical information directly or indirectly affecting Public Safety on campus.
  • Assists in developing and implementing the department’s Annual Strategic Action Plan (ASAP).
Personnel Responsibilities
  • Manages, develops, trains, and supervises TCC’s Campus Public Safety plans and Safety Officers.
  • Supervises and evaluates full and part-time Campus Public Safety officers in the performance of their duties.
  • In conjunction with the Executive Director, ensures that campus safety officers are scheduled to provide the best possible service to the campus community.
  • Creates and adjusts shift schedules at both campuses to maintain minimum staffing levels.
Operational Responsibilities
  • Collaborates with campus administration regarding special events, policy, emergency procedures, and all other campus safety-related activities.
  • Develops strategy to manage campus traffic at special events and during the academic year. Issues traffic and parking citations according to established procedures.
  • Investigates crimes and other incidents occurring on campus. Prepares crime or incident reports on accidents, property damage, fires, law violations, thefts, and disturbances of the peace. Reviews the reports of subordinates and assumes responsibility for follow-up.
  • Investigates and reports the presence of unauthorized persons on grounds or in buildings; deals with disturbances according to established policy.
  • Develops crime prevention activities; enforces laws, traffic regulations, and safety regulations on campus; and cites violators.
  • Patrols campus buildings; protects individuals and controls crowds during assemblies or disturbances.
  • Ensures Campus Safety Department operations and services are maintained to the highest level of performance.
