Position will remain open.

Base pay range

$19.00/hr - $21.00/hr

Definition

Under classroom direction by a Teacher, the Associate Teacher assists in the care, development and instruction of children in a childcare and development program.

Class Characteristics

Employees in this class provide assistance to the teacher of record in the Children’s Center with direct supervision of children ensuring a healthy and safe learning environment.

Representative Duties
  • Assist teachers and primary caregivers as directed.
  • Supervise play activities; enforcement of safety rules; participation with children in group games.
  • Preparation of supplies and the environment for activities.
  • Maintain an orderly environment for the group.
  • Observe, record, and report children’s behavior.
  • Assist children with self‑care activities.
  • Assist children who have difficulty in the group or who temporarily lose their physical or emotional control.
  • Assist with meals and snack service.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Employment Standards

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be 18 years old or older.
  • Must meet educational requirement for California Commission on Teacher Credentialing “Associate Teacher” permit. (Permit will be required following earned experience hours required.)
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
Special Licenses/Certifications
  • 3 semester units in Early Childhood Education and Family Studies (ECEF)
  • 3 semester units in Child/ Human Growth and Development (CD)
  • 3 semester units in an ECEF or CD Program Curriculum
  • Satisfactory completion of California Department of Social Services (CDSS) “Licensing” requirements.
  • Hold and maintain a current pediatric CPR and first aid certificate through an accredited or approved program.
Desired Qualifications
  • 3 semester units in “Infancy” coursework.
  • Bilingual:
    English/Spanish
  • Experience working with young children and their families in a professional setting.

  • Ability to maintain an orderly environment.
  • Dependability.
  • Assist in keeping records.
  • Evidence of enough security and judgment to handle crisis situations.

  • Possess the sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, staff, faculty and the general public.
Knowledge of
  • Department of Education Assessment of Children.
  • Title 5 and Title 22 health and safety requirements.
  • California Commission on Teacher Credentialing permit requirements.
  • Meal service and counting procedures.
  • Working with children’s curriculum.
  • Supervision of children.
  • How to develop anecdotal records.
  • State environmental assessment tool (ERS).
  • Computer software and iPad.
Ability To
  • Follow directions and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Facilitate learning, supporting growth and individual development in all children.
  • Actively communicate with and work with children.
  • Stay calm during emergency situations.
  • Communicate effectively with children and adults.
  • Discipline children.
  • Learn appropriate college and departmental policies, procedures and rules.
  • Understand that children develop differently and to stimulate and nurture the various developmental stages.
  • Learn to assess situations and advise classroom teacher.
Hours and Terms of Employment

Monday-Friday 7am-4pm (On call/As needed)

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand and circulate for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to kneel and squat.
  • Ability to bend, twist, run and jump.
  • Ability to see for purposes of reading laws, codes, rules, policies, other printed matter and for observing students.
  • Ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels.
