River Hawk Scholar Program Admissions and Outreach Coordinator

Northeastern State University is seeking an enthusiastic and student-centered professional to serve as the Admissions and Outreach Coordinator for the River Hawks Scholar Program, an inclusive postsecondary education program for college students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). This grant‑funded position supports inclusive postsecondary access by coordinating recruitment efforts, leading outreach initiatives, and guiding prospective students and their families through the admissions process.

The River Hawks Scholar Program is a four‑year inclusive program designed to provide students with intellectual or developmental disabilities the opportunity to participate in the academic, residential, social, career, and cultural experiences offered by the University with appropriate support for success. The candidate must be a self‑starter, possess strong knowledge of the Tahlequah community, have passion and composure for working with college students with disabilities, be organized, and demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as proficiency in Microsoft Office.

This position reports to the Director of the River Hawks Scholar Program.

Key Responsibilities
  • Recruitment and Outreach
    • Recruits and identifies qualified eligible student participants.
    • Conducts initial intake interviews and completes related paperwork.
    • Works closely with LEA partners to provide direct student and family support, as well as professional development for teachers, counselors & administrators.
    • Prepares high school students with , including low‑income and first‑generation students who may be unfamiliar with IPSE programs, for application to and success at NSU.
    • Develops and coordinates cooperative programs beyond traditional on‑campus programs.
    • Assists with planning and directing camps, conferences, and special programs.
    • Builds and maintains relationships with feeder school personnel.
    • Develops and conducts instructional workshops on program requirements.
    • Manages time, projects, and demonstrates creativity and excellent communication skills.
  • Additional Responsibilities
    • Provides support to prospective students and families throughout the application process (scheduling interviews, assisting with forms, coordinating document submissions).
    • Promotes the River Hawks Scholar Program to prospective students with IDD, families, educators, and community partners across Oklahoma and surrounding regions.
    • Travels to area LEAs to discuss opportunities for  in higher education.
    • Represents NSU at high‑school transition fairs, IEP meetings, parent nights, career‑tech events, and conferences focused on inclusive education and disability services.
    • Develops inclusive, accessible, and culturally relevant outreach materials and digital content.
    • Collaborates with tribal education agencies, vocational rehabilitation services, and special education professionals to expand recruitment pipelines.
    • Coordinates all recruitment efforts for the River Hawks Scholar Program.
    • Assists in the development of the River Hawks Educator micro‑credential training course for education faculty.
    • Develops a “River Hawk for a Day” program for prospective students.
    • Teaches River Hawks program courses.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Inclusive Admissions Process
    • Provides support to prospective students and families throughout the application process.
    • Organizes and leads campus tours, open houses, and orientation sessions tailored for students with IDD.
    • Coordinates with NSU departments such as Disability Services, Housing, and Career Services to ensure a smooth transition for new students.
  • Community & Stakeholder Engagement
    • Builds and maintains strong partnerships with K–12 districts, tribal education programs, disability service agencies, and parent advocacy networks.
    • Assists in developing formal agreements (MOUs) and referral pathways from transition programs, career‑tech centers, and community organizations.
    • Supports public awareness efforts about inclusive higher education opportunities offered through the River Hawks Scholar Program.
