Overview

JOIN OUR TEAM NOW TO RECEIVE A ONE-TIME BONUS PAYMENT OF $5,000 and information about the Florida Law Enforcement Recruitment Bonus Payment Program through  Eligible applicants are full-time Certified Law Enforcement Officers appointed with a Florida criminal justice agency on or after July 1, 2022 and who have never previously been employed as a Law Enforcement Officer within Florida. Bonus payments are taxable and issued by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) in the gross amount of $6,694 (includes $1,694 for taxes).

The DEO issues payments and enforces repayment if the recipient leaves employment before completing a two-year agreement. Additional program information is available here.

EFFECTIVE JANUARY 1, 2025, STARTING SALARY UP TO $71,643 for SWORN LAW ENFORCEMENT WITH PRIOR EXPERIENCE

This position performs general law enforcement work with responsibilities including preservation and protection of life and property, crime prevention and investigation, maintenance of public order, and enforcement of civil and criminal law. Duties may require personal safety risk and require the ability to act without direct supervision, exercising discretion, caution, and self-control under adverse conditions while maintaining control of the situation or emergency.

Work may be performed in uniform or plain clothes, on foot or in a vehicle, and on any assigned shift.

Duties may include special assignments of similar complexity such as forest patrol, search and rescue, mental health unit, and homeless outreach street team, providing assistance to those in need (e.g., intoxicated, homeless, mentally ill, physically disabled).

Employees report to a designated Sergeant and are responsible to their Lieutenant, Captain, Chief, Assistant Sheriff, and the Sheriff. Performance is evaluated through reports, personal contact, inspections, examinations, discussions, and employee performance appraisals.

To be successful, applicants must demonstrate competency in local, state and federal statutes and ordinances, officer safety, firearms proficiency, knowledge of jurisdictional geography, defensive and control tactics, conflict resolution, general communication (written and oral), interpersonal skills, problem solving, driving, team building, and interviewing abilities.

• High School Diploma (Associates Degree preferred).
• Must be at least 19 years of age, a U.S. citizen, of good moral character, and must have completed a CJSTC-approved basic training program for Law Enforcement and pass the Florida certification examination, in compliance with 943.13 F.S.
• Must not be disqualified by any factors outlined in the employment application.
• Must maintain a primary residence within Leon County or a county adjacent to Leon (Wakulla, Liberty, Gadsden, Jefferson; Thomas and Grady in GA).
• Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license with a satisfactory driving history.

• Sit/stand for extended periods; see/hear at normal ranges; speak, read, write, and understand English fluently; ambulate independently.
• Lift/carry up to 150 pounds; push/pull moderate to heavy loads; bend and squat; manual dexterity.
• Drive a vehicle; pass standard Physical Agility and Firearms/Defensive Tactics courses; pass various driving tests.
• Complete all required training mandated by LCSO and FCJSTC; may operate an ATV for forest patrol; load and offload equipment as needed.

• Frequent outdoor work in various temperatures and weather conditions; potential exposure to hazardous materials.
• Must wear required uniform and equipment including a safety belt weighing 10+ pounds.

• Knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and their application; knowledge of county geography and roadways.
• First aid knowledge; ability to follow oral and written instructions; react calmly in emergencies; work well under stress and as part of a team.
• Ability to prepare and present clear reports; enforce the law with fairness; maintain physical conditioning to subdue, restrain, and apprehend violators.
• Ability to meet in-service training requirements and maintain certification; adhere to agency values and ethics.
