The Clinical Athletic Trainer will work under the direction of the practitioner and support their documentation of patient information into the Electronic Medical Record (EMR). Duties are performed in compliance with state and federal laws and regulations governing the legal scope of medical practice. The role is responsible for ensuring the well‑being of patients and for providing a positive, supportive environment for patients and other staff while working with physicians, advanced practitioners, front office and clinical staff.
Job Duties and Responsibilities- Demonstrates competency in orthopedic assessment, range of treatment, knowledge of growth and development and communication appropriate to the age of the patient treated.
- Collaborates with the attending physician to provide quality patient care within the athletic trainer’s scope of practice.
- Performs clinical intake of patients, including taking and recording vital signs, allergies, patient medical/surgical history and medications.
- Obtains a thorough history including chief complaint, pain score, mechanism of injury and review of systems.
- Performs an orthopedic physical examination and concisely presents a case to the attending physician, including proficient interpretation of imaging studies and their official readings under direct supervision of the attending physician.
- Removes sutures, staples, drains; performs basic wound care and applies dressings as directed by the provider.
- Assists with and prepares in‑office injections per department protocol; assists with surgical consent paperwork and preparation for procedure documentation.
- Scripts provider documentation of patient information, following all guidelines for documentation and billing per department protocol and SLPG guidelines.
- Documents and maintains patient care records in a complete, thorough and timely manner, completing all documentation in real time and within the same date of service and correcting any documentation as directed.
- Enters provider orders in the EMR per physician instruction accurately.
- Provides and reviews after‑visit patient education as directed by the provider.
- Performs gait training with gait aids and patient education regarding rehabilitation exercises.
- Applies and removes casts and splints as directed/supervised by the provider.
- Applies, instructs and dispenses DME per provider orders.
Requires sitting, standing and walking for extended periods, using fingers for patient care and EMR data entry, routinely using upper extremities, occasionally lifting items up to 25 pounds, occasionally pushing a cart with supplies up to 30 pounds, occasionally pushing a wheelchair with patient weighing up to 325 pounds, stooping, bending and reaching above shoulder level regularly. Hearing is required for normal conversation and taking blood pressure readings.
General vision, near vision and peripheral vision are all required.
- Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training – required.
- Master’s degree – preferred.
- Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC).
- Current ATC license.
- State licensure by the Board of Medicine in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
- BLS (Basic Life Support) Certification.
- Basic computer skills.
