Job Description & How to Apply Below

Some pupils need more than excellent teaching- they need patience, consistency and someone who believes in their potential, even when they don't.

Step Teachers is working with a specialist alternative provision to recruit a dedicated SEMH & Alternative Provision Teacher for a full-time role starting in September 2026. This is an exciting opportunity to join a supportive setting where relationships, trust and personalised learning are central to helping young people achieve success.

Whether you're an experienced secondary teacher or a primary-trained teacher with experience supporting older pupils or learners with additional needs, this role offers the chance to make a genuine and lasting impact.

This small, specialist provision supports secondary-aged pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs who require a different approach to education.

With small class sizes and a highly personalised curriculum, staff are able to focus on each pupil as an individual, helping them rebuild confidence, develop positive relationships and re‑engage with learning at their own pace.

The school has created a calm, structured environment where consistency, high expectations and nurturing support work together to help pupils thrive.

As an SEMH & Alternative Provision Teacher, you'll deliver engaging lessons that inspire pupils while adapting your teaching to meet a wide range of academic, emotional and behavioural needs.

You'll work collaboratively with teaching assistants, pastoral teams and external professionals to ensure every student receives the personalised support they need to achieve their goals.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • Planning and delivering engaging lessons for secondary-aged pupils within an alternative provision
  • Creating a calm, predictable classroom environment where pupils feel safe and ready to learn
  • Adapting lessons to meet individual learning needs, interests and EHCP outcomes where appropriate
  • Supporting pupils to develop emotional regulation, resilience and confidence alongside academic progress
  • Using restorative approaches and positive behaviour strategies to encourage engagement
  • Monitoring pupil progress and adapting teaching to maximise outcomes
  • Working closely with colleagues, families and external agencies to provide consistent support
  • Contributing to individual learning plans and wider intervention strategies
  • Maintaining high standards of safeguarding, wellbeing and inclusive practice
  • Holds Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or an equivalent recognised teaching qualification
  • Has experience teaching pupils with SEMH, SEND or within alternative provision
  • Builds positive relationships through patience, empathy and consistency
  • Is confident managing behaviour using positive and restorative approaches
  • Can adapt teaching creatively to meet individual needs
  • Enjoys working as part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team
  • Is committed to supporting young people to overcome barriers to learning Applications are welcomed from both experienced secondary teachers and primary-trained teachers with relevant experience working with older pupils or within specialist educational settings.

This is an opportunity to teach in a setting where you'll have the time to build meaningful relationships and see the real difference your support makes.

You'll become part of a dedicated team that celebrates progress in all its forms, recognising that every achievement-whether academic, social or emotional-is a significant step forward for the young people they support.

The role begins on a temporary basis in September 2026, with the opportunity to secure a permanent position for the right teacher.

At Step Teachers, we take the time to understand what matters to you, matching you with schools where you can make a genuine impact while continuing to develop your career.

When you register with us, you'll benefit from:
  • Competitive daily pay
  • Opportunities to secure long-term and permanent teaching positions
  • A dedicated consultant providing ongoing support throughout your placement
  • Access to professional development and CPD opportunities
  • A straightforward registration process and weekly pay
  • A trusted education recruitment partner…
