This position is technical inspection work enforcing codes, regulations, and ordinances for residential and commercial construction projects, including building construction, related site work, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems.
Note: The Department is currently seeking applicants with prior experience in Building, Mechanical, or Electrical Construction.
ResponsibilitiesUnder the license of the City Building Official, the incumbent will:
- Perform highly technical inspections of residential and commercial structures and construction sites to ensure conformity with approved plans and state/municipal codes.
- Check foundations, concrete slabs, beams, pilasters, steel placement, framing, insulation, roofing, and all related construction work.
- Inspect mechanical, electrical, plumbing, gas, and solar energy equipment and related site construction, including zoning, tree/landscaping, transportation, and stormwater features.
- Determine safety, adequacy of capacity, durability of materials, and code compliance for installations.
- Issue cease‑in‑operations orders for non‑conforming installations or when proper licenses or permits are missing.
- Conduct final inspections for Florida Residential Code and Land Use Code compliance before issuing Certificates of Occupancy.
- Inspect flood control ordinances, tree protection, driveway aprons, curbing, sidewalks, and other public right‑of‑way elements for safety and compliance.
- Investigate complaints of code violations, issue citations, and present cases to the judicial board as needed.
- Maintain inspection records, prepare reports, and coordinate with Water, Wastewater, and other departments on site approvals.
- Operate lightweight motor vehicles, climb ladders and scaffolds, and use portable computer, printer, and photographic equipment as part of mobile data capture.
Minimum qualifications include:
- Graduation from an accredited high school or vocational school and at least four (4) years of experience in building and site construction practices.
- Preferred: two (2) years of college coursework in construction, engineering, architecture or a related field.
- Additional qualifications for higher levels: one (1) year of experience in applying municipal and state codes, laws, rules, and regulations.
- All applicants must hold a valid Florida driver’s license.
- Inspection Specialists must obtain a Florida Standard Inspector License (Building, Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, or Two‑Family Dwelling) within one (1) year of employment.
- Site Inspectors must obtain the Florida Floodplain Manager Certification within one (1) year of employment.
- Level information (I‑IV) is included for reference but will be determined based on experience and licensing.
- Ability to lift 40 lbs. ability to stand, walk, and climb ladders or scaffolds.
- Requires moderate use of computers, typing, and screens.
Evaluation of education and experience; drug testing is included in the pre‑employment process.
