Job Summary
An Asphalt Raker is an hourly–rated skilled craft position that assists with the application of asphalt on highways, private roadways, parking lots, and driveways using handheld tools. The role requires working with a crew to pave roadways according to project specifications. The Asphalt Raker may also perform other related duties as directed by the crew foreman to meet project schedules and estimates.

Key

Duties
  • Understand and execute paving procedures while following instructions to meet the project standards.
  • Ensure the finished product by enforcing proper safety and traffic precautions.
  • Prepare road surfaces for hot asphalt material.
  • Distribute and rake asphalt material used in construction, repair, and resurfacing.
  • Finish surfaces by smoothing and tamping asphalt material to the proper grade and thickness.
  • Repair utility cuts by removing temporary material and replacing with permanent hot asphalt material.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Maintain a safety‑first attitude; strictly adhere to safety requirements and procedures.
  • Display a professional and courteous attitude to co‑workers, supervisors, and the general public at all times.
  • Be willing to travel away from home when required.
  • Be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.
Qualifications

Education and Experience

• High school diploma or GED (preferred).

• One to three (1–3) years of industry‑related paving experience (required).

Physical Demands

• Constant physical effort, including standing, for at least eight hours per day.

• Ability to lift frequently at least 50 pounds and carry at least 30 pounds personally; up to 150 pounds with assistance.

• Maintain constant alertness to concurrent site activities.

• Frequently walk on uneven surfaces in varying weather conditions.

• Ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech and other sounds.

Work Environment

• Work outdoors in all weather conditions.

• Exposure to high noise and dust levels typical of construction sites.

• Regularly work near heavy equipment and moving machinery.

• May involve substances such as grease, gasoline, diesel fuel, and hot asphalt mix.
