Assistant Teaching Professor, Music

The Music Department within the College of Arts and Letters at the University of Tampa seeks a full-time, non-tenure-track position as an Assistant Teaching Professor of Music with experience in popular musics (broadly defined) of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries to begin in August 2026. The position is renewable and eligible for promotion.

The University of Tampa is a medium-sized, comprehensive, residentially-based private institution of more than 11,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The University is ideally situated on a beautiful 110-acre campus next to the Hillsborough River, adjacent to Tampa's dynamic central business district, which is a growing, vibrant, diverse metropolitan area.

The primary responsibility of this position is to teach music humanities survey courses on popular styles (e.g. jazz, rock, pop, film music) to majors and non-majors, as well as a music-centered humanities class that includes a focus on reading and writing for the university's general education curriculum.

We seek a faculty member with a passion for teaching who will work to maintain and eventually expand the department's course offerings in popular musical styles. The successful candidate will also participate in departmental and college/university service and occasionally oversee senior capstone research (where appropriate). A master's degree in Music is required.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD (or ABD) in musicology, ethnomusicology, or related field
  • Successful record of teaching at the college level
  • Scholarly specialization in popular musics of the twentieth or twenty-first centuries, such as jazz, rock, pop, film/game music, etc.
  • Experience teaching non-major music courses
  • Experience teaching writing within a music curriculum

Required Attachments:

  • Cover letter
  • Current curriculum vitae
  • A statement of teaching philosophy.
  • Copies of graduate degree transcripts and contact information (name, phone numbers, and emails) for three professional references will be required at subsequent stages for finalist candidates.

The University of Tampa is an equal opportunity employer dedicated to excellence through diversity and does not discriminate on the basis of age, race, sex, disability, sexual orientation, national origin, religion, marital status, gender identity, veteran status, or any other non-job related criteria.
