Responsibilities
  • Specimen intake and preservation: move new specimens through decontamination (e.g., freezing), communicate with donors to acquire label data, and affix specimens to archival paper according to herbarium standards.
  • Specimen remediation and management: repair damaged specimens, create packets for loose parts, construct new herbarium specimens from damaged material, contribute to annual assessment reporting, and maintain and improve standard operating procedures for major herbarium processes.
  • Management of digital assets: enter specimen data using the Virtual Herbarium database platform, verify database entries for errors, and assess digital images of specimens for errors.
  • Supporting student workers, volunteers, and researchers: assist students on grant‑funded projects (e.g., Florida Wildlife Commission digitization), manage volunteer efforts, and support staff/faculty/student research requests.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Minimum:
    Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate field with two years of work experience in a library or equivalent coursework.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree (or confirmed graduation date) and at least one year of experience curating botanical specimens in a herbarium, museum, or library.
  • Familiarity with global and regional biological databases, experience collecting and identifying Florida plants, basic coding in R, Python, or both, familiarity with medical botany and/or plant biochemistry, and fluency with office software.
  • Degree equivalency: four years of direct experience for a bachelor’s degree.
  • Compliance with Senate Bill 1310 regarding substitution of work experience for postsecondary education requirements.
