Orion Marine Group has an immediate opening for Crane Operators in Tampa, FL
. This position supports field operations at marine project locations for Orion Marine Construction, Inc. Incumbents are responsible for operating cranes and other hoisting equipment in the construction or repair of marine terminals and dock facilities. They will work closely with the Project Superintendent, Foreman, Pile Drivers, Welders, Boat Captain, Laborers, Helpers and other craft workers.

Specific Responsibilities
  • Work as assigned by the Foreman to ensure successful completion of ongoing or new marine construction projects.
  • Assist in unloading and assembling of crane or other hoisting equipment to be used in marine construction activities.
  • Utilize basic skills as a hook operator in swinging rig, raising and lowering crane boom, raising and lowering load lines on the crane.
  • Operate a hydraulic rubber tire or track crane equipped with a multiple part pick‑up or single line hoist suspended from a boom by a cable.
  • Maneuver and position loads over designated areas in a smooth, safe manner.
  • Move hand levers and depress pedals to rotate chassis over lift load points.
  • Utilize load charts to determine load and radius capabilities of the crane.
  • Assist in the installation of boom and hoisting cables on the hoisting equipment.
  • Perform maintenance duties such as cleaning, greasing, oiling and fueling of assigned equipment.
  • Perform daily safety inspection of crane and identify potential problem areas such as worn cables, worn bands on hoisting mechanisms, broken gears, housing, etc.
  • Ensure that crane boom is properly secured on the work barge before moving from one work location to another and otherwise demonstrate safe work practices in all aspects of crane operation.
  • Work closely with Foreman, Pile Drivers, Welders, Helpers, Laborers and other craft persons to complete current projects in a safe, efficient and timely manner.
  • Participate in Safety and Environmental initiatives that contribute to compliance with State/Federal regulations and improve company programs.
  • Maintain confidentiality by not disclosing proprietary or trade secret information.
  • Be responsible and accountable for personal safety, as well as the safety of all co‑workers and others who come in contact with the incumbent.
  • Stop work when an unsafe condition or situation is anticipated or observed.
  • Comply with all applicable laws, regulations and company policies and report violations promptly.
Position Requirements
  • A minimum of two (2) years of crane operations experience on land and on barges, or equivalent experience and training.
  • Certified by an ANSI accredited agency.
  • Must obtain a DOT medical exam within one month of employment.
  • Able to read, understand, and use crane load charts.
  • General knowledge of construction rigging – use of slings, cable chokers, spreader bars, multi‑part load blocks, etc.

  • Walking, stepping, climbing or otherwise moving from one job site location to another, including onto and off of work barges, boats, vessels or dock facilities.
  • Wearing welding face shields, personal flotation devices, and self‑contained breathing apparatus.
  • Standing, stooping, kneeling, squatting, climbing or sitting for long periods of time.
  • Repetitive movements of feet, shoulders, arms, wrists, hands and back.
  • Climbing vertical ladders up to 40‑50 ft.
  • Working in confined spaces and at elevated heights.
  • Lifting and carrying 50 lb. objects when required.
  • Adapting to extreme temperature changes and outdoor conditions.
