Position SummaryThis position supports field operations at marine project locations, operating cranes and other hoisting equipment for construction or repair of marine terminals and dock facilities. The operator works closely with the Project Superintendent, Barge Foreman, welders, boat captain, laborers, and other skilled or semi‑skilled crew members.
Specific Responsibilities- Works as assigned by the Barge Foreman to ensure successful completion of ongoing or new marine construction projects.
- Assists in unloading and assembling cranes or other hoisting equipment for marine construction activities.
- Functions as a hook operator, swinging rig, raising and lowering crane boom, and managing load lines.
- Operates hydraulic rubber tire or track cranes equipped with pickup or single line hoists.
- Maneuvers and positions loads over designated areas in a safe manner.
- Uses load charts to determine crane load and radius capabilities.
- Assists in installing boom and hoisting cables on equipment.
- Performs maintenance tasks such as cleaning, greasing, oiling, and fueling assigned equipment.
- Conducts daily safety inspections of cranes, identifying potential issues.
- Secures crane booms on work barges before moving to new locations.
- Collaborates with crew to complete projects safely, efficiently, and on schedule.
- Participates in safety and environmental initiatives to meet regulatory requirements.
- Responsible for personal safety.
- Accountable for the safety of all co‑workers and others.
- Stops work when unsafe conditions are observed or anticipated.
- Complies with all applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures. Failure to comply may result in disciplinary action, including dismissal.
- Reports violations promptly, subject to disciplinary action, including dismissal, if failures occur.
- Performs other related administrative and technical duties as assigned.
- Maintains confidentiality of proprietary or trade secret information.
- Minimum of two (2) years of crane operations experience on land or barges, or equivalent training.
- Certified by an ANSI accredited agency.
- Understanding of basic functions and operations of pile hammers (diesel, air, hydraulic, drop hammers).
- Able to read, understand, and use crane load charts.
- General knowledge of construction rigging (slings, cable chokers, spreader bars).
- Capable of passing a crane operations certification test.
- Perform essential functions with or without reasonable workplace accommodation.
- Wear and properly utilize PPE: hard hat, safety glasses, respirators, ear plugs, steel‑toed shoes, or other protective equipment as required.
- Identify critical issues and formulate action plans with all levels of management.
- Remain calm during emergencies and respond appropriately; evacuate work area promptly if necessary.
- Walking, stepping, climbing, or moving between job site locations, including work barges, boats, vessels, or dock facilities.
- Visually seeing crane operations, naturally or with corrective lenses.
- Standing, stooping, kneeling, squatting, climbing, or sitting for long periods.
- Performing repetitive movements by feet, shoulders, arms, wrists, hands, and back.
- Climbing vertical ladders to heights of 40’‑50’.
- Working in confined spaces and at elevated heights.
- Lifting and carrying objects up to 50 lbs as required.
- Adapting to extreme temperature changes, outdoor exposure, and prolonged exposure.
- Remaining calm during emergencies and responding appropriately.
