Under the supervision of the HVAC Plant Operator and/or the Director of Facilities, this position is responsible for implementing HVAC preventive maintenance programs and maintaining all HVAC‑related equipment, including the chiller plant.
Located in downtown Tampa, the Straz Center offers a team‑based work environment and a comprehensive benefits package.
Essential Functions- Responsible for mechanical rooms, air handling units, pumps, valves, interior drinking water fountain systems, fountain pumps, domestic/mechanical water systems and fire alarm systems.
- Assists in producing weekly HVAC schedules and monitoring/adjusting the HVAC system and controls on a daily basis, adjusting for exterior conditions to maintain comfortable temperature and humidity.
- Repairs mechanical, electrical and electronic components of HVAC and other building‑wide systems; calls qualified contractors when repairs exceed skill level.
- Assists outside contractors as necessary.
- Performs preventive maintenance on all mechanical and electrical HVAC equipment, keeping entries in the computerized maintenance log and manual files current; recommends equipment and system modifications.
- Assists in facilities construction, renovation projects and special event setup.
- Performs general maintenance repair work including electrical, plumbing, painting, carpentry, etc.
- Maintains stocking levels and records of refrigerants and supplies; recommends purchases; manages stock areas, especially in the chiller room, tower area and mechanical rooms.
- Works flexible shifts including nights, weekends and holidays to cover events.
- Responds to emergencies within 30–45 minutes when called during scheduled shifts.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.
Minimum Qualifications- Working knowledge of hand‑and‑power tools, meters and recording instruments.
- Ability to read and work from blueprints and schematics.
- Understanding of chiller plant & EMS operation and plant monitoring.
- Strong background in electrical and mechanical system repairs.
- Familiarity with building construction and maintenance practices in major facilities or plants.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Experience with computerized energy management systems and HVAC controls.
- Successful completion of a Level 2 background check.
- Commercial HVAC technician, certification preferred with commercial/large facility background and appropriate universal refrigeration license as required by 40 CFR.
- Minimum of 2 years as a chiller plant operator or commercial service technician.
- High‑school diploma or equivalent.
Frequent standing, reaching with hands and arms, squatting, stooping, bending, climbing ladders, lifting up to 50 pounds (occasionally up to 100 pounds) for tools, motors, furniture, etc. Requires hand strength, balance and good vision and hearing.
Work EnvironmentNoise level is usually moderate to high.
TravelThis position is not expected to require travel.
