Job Description

Generator Service Technicians perform shop and field repairs, maintenance service, and troubleshooting of diesel and gas generators, including automatic transfer switches, batteries, and load banks.

Essential Job Functions

  • Perform technical skills including mechanical, electrical, troubleshooting and repair of generators.
  • Provide emergency/unscheduled repairs during normal hours, after‑hours, weekends, and holidays.
  • Carry out scheduled preventative maintenance and repairs.
  • Read and interpret operational manuals, electrical schematics, universal generator literature, and work orders.
  • Perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Use hand and power tools, electric meters, and material handling equipment.
  • Detect faulty operations, defective material and report to the service manager in a timely manner.
  • Comply with safety regulations and maintain clean, orderly shop work areas, company vehicles, and job sites.
  • Drive company vehicle to and from job sites; overnight travel by land and/or air may be required on occasion.

Additional Job Functions

  • Possibly use welding tools, winch, pulley, hoist, and/or pallet jack.
  • May be required to tow a trailer, portable generator, or load bank using company vehicle.

Required Experience

  • Working knowledge of power generation systems and components, mechanical operations, hazards, and proper usage to troubleshoot and diagnose malfunctions.
  • Proficient with generator and transfer switch controls.
  • Strong mechanical and electrical skills.
  • Ability to interpret schematics and operational manuals for repair and maintenance tasks.
  • Knowledge of fundamental mathematical operations.
  • Ability to take preventative safety measures to avoid electrical shock, limit exposure to loud noises, and prevent personal injury using PPE, including NFPA 70E equipment when applicable.
  • Proficient use of mechanical tools for repair and maintenance of generators.
  • Ability to work in non‑climate controlled environments such as outdoor weather, wet, humid, or extreme heat conditions.
  • Require extended periods of standing, sitting while driving, bending, pulling, pushing, reaching, kneeling, squatting, and use of hands.
  • Ability to lift and/or move heavy objects up to 100 lbs. throughout the work day.

Qualifications

  • High School or equivalent (GED).
  • 5 to 7 years of related work experience, training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Motor Vehicle Record in good standing and compliance with Company policy.
