Position: Aquatics Leader I

This is responsible work involving the operation of municipal swimming facilities. Bargaining unit position.

Nature Of Work

An employee in this class is responsible for performing lifeguarding tasks and enforcing safety rules at a municipal swimming facility. Tasks are of routine difficulty and include conducting aquatics programs, preparation of standard reports and participation in maintaining an assigned area in a safe condition. The exercise of some initiative and independent judgement is required when responding to emergency situations which might arise.

These employees work under general supervision, insuring that proper observation techniques and safety of patrons at swimming areas are maintained at all times. Employees might be required to work irregular hours including weekends, evenings, and holidays. In the absence of a higher level aquatics leader, employees in this class will be responsible for monitoring activities of seasonal lifeguards and other assigned personnel.

Work is reviewed through observation, periodic conferences and results obtained.

Examples of Duties
  • Provides instruction for swimming, lifeguarding, CPR/FPR, and programs for the handicapped; conducts rescue drills and training of seasonal personnel.
  • Assists higher level aquatics leader at a pool; schedules, assigns and oversees other personnel when required; participates in the enforcement of swimming pool rules and regulations.
  • Participates in the maintenance of area, equipment and supplies; when assigned to a pool, tests water daily, ensures that filtration system is working properly, and performs such pool maintenance as brushing, vacuuming, backwashing, and adjusting chemicals under direction of a higher level aquatic leader; informs supervisor of need to restock supplies in order to maintain correct supply levels.
  • Directs special activities, programs and water sports at a pool; performs special assignments such as overseeing swim meets and other aquatics activities.
  • Completes attendance reports, daily reports and special activity sheets as required; compiles accident reports; maintains time card, inventory and supply ordering information; maintains receipts when fees are charged.
  • Answers phones and provides information regarding program and facility.
  • Plans and develops new programs for facility as needed.
  • Performs all lifeguard duties when needed; administers first aid and performs lifesaving activities; responds to emergencies.
  • Performs related work as required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of lifesaving principles and practices; pool rules and regulations; water safety techniques and the use of lifesaving equipment; first aid procedures.
  • Skills in the operation and maintenance of lifesaving equipment; lifesaving procedures.
  • Ability to teach swimming and lifesaving methods; enforce rules and regulations firmly, tactfully and impartially; prevent hazardous situations from developing; react quickly, calmly and rationally in emergencies; maintain records and compile reports when needed; communicate and interact effectively with the general public; perform duties requiring physical strength and endurance.
Physical Requirements

Mostly standing, recreation and a combination of working indoors and outdoors. Requires some use of computer, typing and viewing a monitor

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school, preferably with six (6) months experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience in; collegiate sports, participation, coaching (paid or volunteer) in aquatics, or recreation operations, including maintenance and training tasks

Or

An equivalent combination of education (not less than possession of a high school diploma/GED), training and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-related competencies noted above.

Licenses or Certifications
  • Possession of current nationally certified First Aid and Lifeguarding Certificates;
  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer Certificate;
  • A valid driver's license is preferred.
