Overview

An employee in this classification is responsible for scheduling, coordinating, and supervising the operations of a major Fleet Maintenance repair and service center. The role oversees maintenance and repair activities for a diverse municipal fleet, including diesel and light-duty vehicles, refuse trucks, heavy equipment and specialty off-road equipment. In addition to supervising assignments of a technical nature, employees are expected to perform requisite personnel management activities, including discipline administration, performance appraisals, training, and employee selection.

Other tasks performed include providing input for developing work unit goals and objectives and formulating work methods and procedures for their accomplishment. The exercise of considerable initiative and independent judgment is required in scheduling and assigning work activities and in ensuring timely completion. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion through observation, conferences, reports submitted, and results obtained.

of Duties
  • Schedules, coordinates, and supervises the operation of a major Fleet Maintenance repair and service center.
  • Assigns, oversees, and evaluates the performance of complex maintenance and specialized repair work for diesel and light-duty vehicles, refuse trucks, heavy equipment and specialty off-road equipment; inspects and tests completed work to ensure compliance with established quality and safety standards; provides technical guidance and assistance to subordinates in resolving unusual or complex mechanical issues; oversees the dispensing of fuel, oil, and transmission fluid during servicing operations.
  • Prepares and maintains records and reports related to servicing, inspection, maintenance, and repair activities performed by the work unit, including the tracking and use of supplies and materials.
  • Recommends staffing adjustments to meet operational and working condition requirements; trains and instructs subordinates in the proper use of tools, equipment, and safety practices to prevent injuries; evaluates and recommends the acquisition and replacement of tools and equipment; develops and recommends modifications to work methods to improve efficiency, productivity, and quality.
  • Documents complaints to corrects issues and prevent recurrence; utilizes information provided by clients or complainants to complete service requests; responds to inquiries by telephone and in person to explain issues or provide information.
  • Use a camera to document damage to vehicles and job sites.
  • Prepares written reports to present information, data, findings, and recommendations; performs required mathematical calculations.
  • Provides input to the repair center budget as part of the unit budget; recommends personnel actions, including hiring, promotions, transfers, demotions, suspensions, and dismissals; administers discipline; responds to employee grievances; and completes performance evaluations.
  • Performs related work as required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Extensive knowledge of: standard methods, practices, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of diesel and light-duty vehicles, refuse trucks, heavy equipment and specialty off-road equipment.

Considerable knowledge of: occupational hazards and safety precautions of the automotive maintenance and repair trade; construction, assembly, and maintenance requirements of diversified diesel and light-duty vehicles.

Working knowledge of: the operation and use of diesel and light-duty vehicles, refuse trucks, and heavy or specialty off-road equipment; effective supervisory techniques; and maintenance planning and scheduling practices.

Ability to: identify, diagnose, and repair defects in a wide variety of diesel and light-duty vehicles, refuse trucks, heavy equipment or specialty off-road equipment; plan, assign, and supervise the work of others; manage and direct the operation of a fleet maintenance…
