Mortimer House School is seeking a dedicated English Teacher to join our team. This is a rewarding opportunity to make a real difference by supporting vulnerable young people and helping them achieve meaningful educational and personal outcomes.

We are a secondary school teaching students aged 11 to 18, all of whom have Education, Health and Care Plans. Our pupils have social, emotional and mental health needs, and many have experienced significant challenges in their lives. At Mortimer House, relationships are at the heart of everything we do. Through use of small class sizes (maximum 4 students) we build real connections with the young people we support.

We use positive behaviour support and emotion coaching to help young people feel safe, understood and ready to learn. Our approach is trauma-informed and restorative, ensuring that pupils are supported with consistency, empathy and high expectations.

Preparing young people for adulthood is central to our work. We are proud of the positive outcomes our pupils achieve, and we are looking for an English teacher who shares our belief that every young person deserves the chance to succeed, grow and thrive.

  • Current or previous experience of teaching in a SEN setting.
  • Current knowledge of Local Authority and National expectations for SEND including 2014 SEND Code of Practice including knowledge of EHCP and their implementation.
  • Ability to work creatively and use initiative as necessary.
  • Desire to develop professionally and undertake additional relevant qualifications.
Role responsibilities
  • Teach in a small Special Educational Needs provision supporting young people with a range of needs that includes those with autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, attachment difficulties or trauma.
  • Demonstrate empathy and understanding of young people with mental health & complex needs.
  • Contribute to Education, Health and Care Plan review meetings
  • Design and teach engaging schemes of work and lessons that promote academic progress and meet pupils’ personalised outcomes, including Functional Skills and GCSE qualifications.
  • Promote, develop and sustain positive relationships which include parents and carers, other agencies and community partnerships.
  • Actively engage in staff meetings and INSET activities
  • Create regular opportunities within lessons to support pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.
  • Complete all required mandatory training ahead of set completion dates.
