Salary: Grade 13, ranging from £17,560 - £19,014 for 25 hours per week.
Role SummaryAs a Travel Trainer you will support children and young people to develop the skills, confidence and awareness needed to travel safely and responsibly, with a focus on increasing independence.
You will plan and deliver structured travel training programmes tailored to individual needs, working in partnership with families, schools, colleges and internal colleagues. You will contribute to improving access to education and community opportunities while promoting independence, inclusion and personal development.
What You’ll Do- Key Responsibilities
- Deliver tailored travel training to build confidence using public transport
- Support learners through one-to-one and group sessions in schools, colleges and the community
- Accompany journeys, helping learners travel safely, manage fares and behave appropriately
- Identify and assess learners ready for independent travel, working with partners and families
- Monitor progress, carry out risk assessments and provide shadowing where needed
- Maintain clear records and contribute to reports and programme development
- Promote independent travel training through events, presentations and partnership working
- Support reviews and provide general admin support to the wider transport service
- Knowledge of safe travel practices, road safety and use of public transport
- Understanding of the needs of children and young people, including those with additional needs and/or vulnerabilities
- Awareness of safeguarding responsibilities and professional boundaries when working with children and young people
- Basic understanding of equality, diversity and inclusion in service delivery
- Experience of working directly with children and/or young people in a support, education or training capacity
- Experience of delivering one-to-one or small-group support tailored to individual needs
- Experience of communicating effectively with parents/carers and professionals
- Experience of managing personal safety and risk in a community or public setting
- GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Maths, or demonstrable equivalent skills
- Ability to build positive, trusting relationships with children and young people
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to adapt style to suit individual needs
- Ability to plan, deliver and review structured training activities
- Good observation, assessment and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a wider team
- Basic IT skills for recording information and communicating with colleagues
- Knowledge of SEND travel, independent travel training or supported travel programmes
- Awareness of local transport networks and services
- Experience of delivering travel training or independence-focused support
- Experience of working with children and young people with SEND
- Experience of recording progress and outcomes against agreed objectives
- Relevant qualification in education, youth work, care or training
- First Aid qualification
- Coaching or mentoring skills
- Confidence in managing challenging situations calmly and professionally
