R&D Materials Senior Engineer

Position Summary
This position is responsible for executing compound development projects as part of the Technology R&D Materials organization. The position is located in Taunton, Massachusetts.
Nature & Scope
Reporting to the Specialty Compound Manager, the R&D Materials Senior Engineer leads compound development projects and is accountable for communicating and delivering results to the broader Technology team. The role applies a systematic and designed experimental approach to develop new polymeric compounds and evaluate changes in material performance prior to commercial scale‑up in our manufacturing plants.
Specific Job Duties
- Leads or supports cross‑functional project teams in production‑scale compounding and prototype processing trials within the applicable Prysmian manufacturing facility associated with compound development projects.
- Works with a wide range of rubber (CSPE, CPE, Neoprene) and plastics systems to drive cost reduction and enhanced performance from bench scale to commercialization.
- Develops material specification and quality test programs to ensure robust compound performance.
- Investigates and applies new polymer and additive technologies from a variety of suppliers.
- Leverages polymers and materials experience to identify and execute projects which improve compound/cable sustainability and carbon footprint.
- Works to tight deadlines while contributing to longer‑term R&D projects.
- Coordinates laboratory experiments through Technical Service Requests.
- Supervises daily activities of the R&D Materials laboratory technician to complete project tasks.
- Creates and modifies compound specifications (including relevant raw material codes) to support the production of new or existing compounds.
- Prepares informative and accurate technical reports.
- Updates and maintains records/database on compound changes or modifications.

Education
Qualified candidates will possess a minimum of a B.S. degree in Chemical or Polymer Engineering, Chemistry, or related discipline. Advanced degree preferred.
Experience
- Hands‑on experience with polymer compound development and processing.
- Experience with specialty rubber (CSPE, CPE, Neoprene) and plastic formulations, as well as different flame retardant technologies.
- Good understanding of structure–property relationships of polymer blends.
- Proven track record of delivering projects and communicating results.
- Previous experience with polymer compound development in the wire & cable industry preferred.
