Life Safety Systems/LSS Design Engineer (Fire Protection & Sprinkler)
Project Overview:
We are in the detailed design and construction execution phase of a new advanced semiconductor fabrication facility. We need a proven Life Safety Systems engineer who has lived through at least one major fab tool-install or high-hazard (H-occupancy) project from design through commissioning and Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) sign-off.
Full ownership of fire alarm, fire sprinkler, clean-agent, and VESDA systems design for the entire fab, sub-fab, and central utility building (CUB). Hydraulic calculations (Auto Sprink, HASS, Sprink
CAD) for high-density process tool layouts, HPM rooms, sub-fabs, and bulk gas vaults. Coordination of fire protection scope with process tool vendors (Applied Materials, Lam, ASML, TEL, etc.) and their HPM delivery/storage requirements. Design and specification of special suppression systems (clean-agent for electrical rooms, CO2 or water mist for certain wet benches). Direct interface with the local Fire Marshal, factory insurance carrier (FM Global or equivalent), and third-party reviewers.
Production of code compliance matrix (IFC, NFPA 13, NFPA 318, NFPA 2001, FM Data Sheets, local amendments). Leadership of fire/life-safety coordination meetings with MEP, process, and architectural teams. Review of contractor shop drawings, RFIs, and field installation quality. Final commissioning, integrated systems testing (IST), and handover to fab operations.
- 6–15+ years designing fire protection systems on complex projects; at least one completed semiconductor fab, data center, or pharma/biotech facility required.
- Expert-level hydraulic modeling experience (Auto Sprink or Hydra
CALC) on high-hazard occupancies. - Deep working knowledge of NFPA 13, NFPA 318 (semiconductor chapter), FM Data Sheet 7-7, and local AHJ nuances.
- NICET Level III or IV in Water-Based Systems (or able to obtain within 6 months) strongly preferred; PE in Fire Protection is a big plus.
- Proven ability to coordinate with process tool hook-up teams and manage hundreds of tool-specific fire protection tie-ins.
- Experience with Revit/BIM 360 coordination and Navisworks clash detection.
- Excellent communicator – you will present to executives, Fire Marshals, and insurance carriers.
- Mechanical Design Engineering Background.
