Student Employment, Community Work Study – East High ESL/MLL Teacher Assistant/Worker I (P/T)
Location:
East High School, Salt Lake City, UT. The position supports 9th–12th grade Multi-Language Learners (MLLs), often referred to as ESL students, by assisting teachers with activities that move vocabulary, speaking, writing, and reading skills forward. The role involves working with small groups or individuals and tracking progress. East High hosts students speaking 40–80 different languages; multilingual skills are a plus.
- Assist teacher in mentoring and tutoring high-school students in rudimentary English skills.
- Support English Language Learning/MLL students through structured activities and progress tracking.
- Ability to read, write, and speak well in English.
- Bilingual skills are a plus.
- Desire to work with high school students from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
- Serve as a positive role model and mentor.
- Ability to work with students, staff, faculty, and community members from varied backgrounds, including those with disabilities.
- Must have an SLCC Federal work-study award through SLCC’s Financial Aid office.
- Must be able to earn a Work Study award.
- Must be enrolled in 6 credit hours per semester.
- Must work at least 10 hours and no more than 20 hours per week during the semester.
- Must be comfortable talking with students, staff, and faculty.
- Must have basic computer skills.
- Program Associates may create their own work schedules within available hours at their school sites.
- Must commit to attending an orientation and team meetings at the outset.
- Must be able to leave campus and access the partner site using their preferred transportation method.
- Understanding of English language and usage.
- Multi-language speaking is a significant benefit.
- Experience Teaching Or Tutoring.
- Excellent listening, organization, and problem-solving skills.
- Experience Working With High-school Age Students.
