Traffic and Safety Operations Engineer
The Traffic and Safety Group of the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is advertising to fill the Traffic and Safety Operations Engineer position.
This individual is responsible for leading and managing operational aspects of the Traffic and Safety Division including:
- Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) - compliance and interpretation for Utah and influencing the direction of the next editions of the manual at the national level.
- Development of Engineering Standards and System Selection - determining appropriate products for crashworthy barriers, attenuators, and roadside sign assemblies.
- Safety Asset Management - responding to concerns related to the long term quality and conditions of in place safety assets.
- Work Zone Safety - developing standards and applying technology to improve work zone safety and efficiency in the state of Utah
- Americans with Disabilities Act - leading UDOT’s efforts to produce a transportation system that meets the requirements of ADA. Development of standards and processes that deliver a roadway system that supports goals of the ADA.
- Developing new approaches and technologies to improve roadway safety for all users.
Excellent communications skills and technical expertise are needed to support and coordinate with Region staff in maintenance, design and operations. This individual regularly interacts with individuals at the University level in research activities and manufacturers in the industry to develop new tools and products.
Principle DutiesAs the Traffic and Safety Operations Engineer, you will:
- Develop innovative processes, designs and management schemes to improve safety and operational efficiency roadside barriers and attenuation.
- Determine likely areas for innovation in Traffic and Safety including the incorporation of work zone technologies, guidance on innovative intersections and concepts, asset management and guidance and management of research efforts within the division.
- Develop and implement standards related to roadway signing, roadside barriers, attenuation, Traffic control and ADA installations.
- Oversee and project support in relation to MUTCD, attenuation, barrier, work zone inspection and ADA issues including project reviews.
- Oversee the development of department training regarding Traffic Control, ADA infrastructure, Roadside Design Guide, Attenuator and Guardrail and MUTCD.
- Support and provide guidance on Policy and Administrative rules assigned to the Traffic and Safety Division.
- Participate as a UDOT representative in national groups such as Committee on Traffic Engineering (CTE) and National Committee on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (NCUTCD).
- Coordinate and/or act as a liaison between UDOT Traffic and Safety and UDOT Regions.
To be considered for this position, applicants must meet all of the following mandatory requirements:
- Be registered as a Professional Engineer (PE) in Utah
- Have at least four (4) years of engineering experience following licensure as a PE
- Have a thorough understanding of engineering principles and practices
This position may be filled at the Engineering Manager I level for applicants without four (4) years of post PE experience. In order to qualify for this level, the applicant must have an active PE license in Utah and two (2) years of engineering experience following licensure as a PE. Salary range for Engineering Manager I is $45.53 - $72.25.
