The Office of the Utah Attorney General has an immediate opening for a Sergeant in the Investigation Division. Candidate must be a POST certified law enforcement officer with demonstrated ability to investigate complex cases. This is an entry level position until the successful candidate completes an 18-month probationary period.
Incumbent conducts investigations focusing on an array of major felony crimes to include:
Fraud and Financial Crimes, Human Trafficking, Public Corruption, Conflict Cases, and other major felony crime in violation of the laws and regulations of the State of Utah. Incumbent works closely with and in support of Attorney General prosecutors. Incumbent performs a full range of investigative assignments. Investigations typically include researching and gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and documenting the investigative process, with emphasis on financial transactions and business operations, concealing or facilitating criminal conduct.
Incumbent may be assigned in accordance with the needs of the division. A commitment to work in any investigative unit within the division is a condition of continuing employment. These units include the Special Investigation Unit (SIU), Strategic Enforcement to Combat Unlawful Racketeering and Exploitation (SECURE) Strike Force, Cooperative Disability Investigations (CDI), Crimes Against State Economy (CASE), Trust Land Investigations (SITLA) and the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force (ICAC).
Some assignments require investigations of the trafficking and production of explicit sexual images, including graphic and explicit child sex abuse material. Such assignments require viewing of child sex abuse material.
Most assignments include irregular hours, night and occasional weekend assignments. Overtime work could be mandatory. Travel is required throughout the State.
- Enforces laws, rules, and regulations.
- Conducts investigations into allegations of a variety of inappropriate activities, rules infractions or illegal actions.
- Ensures compliance with applicable federal and/or state laws, regulations and/or agency rules, standards, and guidelines, etc.
- Receives, researches, and responds to incoming questions or complaints; provides information, explains policy and procedures, and/or facilitates a resolution.
- Maintains detailed inspection or investigation records, prepares reports, and attends to other related administrative requirements.
- Acts as an expert witness. Gives testimony and/or recommendations in court cases and/or hearings.
- Coordinates program activities, services, and/or program implementation with private providers, other governmental entities, program users, etc.

- POST certified in Utah as a law enforcement officer
- Use logic to analyze or identify underlying principles, reasons, or facts associated with information or data to draw conclusions

- Applicants must be currently certified as a Peace Officer in the State of Utah or eligible for immediate certification.
- A breadth of law enforcement experience is desirable. Prior actual investigative experience will be carefully considered.
- A bachelor's degree in a related field of study is preferred.
- Applicants must have demonstrated ability to investigate complex cases.
- Preference will be given to multilingual candidates, particularly to applicants fluent in Spanish.
- Valid driver license required to drive a motor vehicle on a highway in this state per UCA
