Job Description
The Long Term Physical Education and History Teacher at Telford Langley School delivers high-quality teaching and learning experiences across Key Stages 3 and 4. This role involves planning, preparing, and delivering engaging lessons that meet the needs of all pupils, fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment. The postholder supports pupils’ academic progress and personal development in both Physical Education and History, contributing to the overall ethos and success of the school.
Key Responsibilities
Plan and deliver effective, stimulating lessons in Physical Education and History in line with the National Curriculum and school policies.
Assess, record and report on pupil progress, providing constructive feedback to support learning and development.
Create and maintain a safe, well-organised, and positive classroom environment that promotes pupil engagement and achievement.
Develop and implement differentiated teaching strategies to support pupils of varying abilities and learning needs.
Contribute to the development and review of curriculum materials and schemes of work within Physical Education and History departments.
Support the preparation of pupils for external examinations and assessments.
Participate in departmental and whole-school meetings, training, and professional development activities.
Promote positive behaviour and support the school’s safeguarding and child protection procedures.
Engage with parents and carers to support pupil progress and well-being as appropriate.
Contribute to extra-curricular activities, particularly those related to Physical Education and History, to enrich the pupil experience.
Required Qualifications
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent recognition to teach in England.
Degree or equivalent qualification in Physical Education, History, or a closely related subject.
Education
Completion of secondary education to a minimum of Level 3, with strong GCSE or equivalent results in English and Mathematics.
Relevant degree-level qualification in the subject areas taught.
Evidence of ongoing professional development in teaching practise and subject knowledge.
Experience
Proven experience teaching Physical Education and History to pupils in secondary education, preferably within Key Stages 3 and 4.
Experience of planning and delivering lessons that engage and motivate pupils.
Experience in assessing pupil progress and using assessment outcomes to inform teaching.
Previous involvement in extra-curricular activities or school enrichment programmes is desirable.
Knowledge and Skills
Strong subject knowledge in both Physical Education and History aligned with current curriculum requirements.
Effective classroom management techniques that promote positive behaviour and engagement.
Ability to differentiate teaching to meet the diverse needs of pupils, including those with additional learning needs.
Good communication and interpersonal skills to build positive relationships with pupils, colleagues, and parents.
Proficient use of information and communication technology to support teaching and learning.
Organisational skills to manage workload and meet deadlines efficiently.
Understanding of safeguarding legislation and the ability to apply it within a school setting.
Preferred Qualifications
Further professional qualifications or training related to Physical Education, History, or education.
Experience working within a secondary school setting in the West Midlands or surrounding areas.
Additional coaching qualifications or experience in school sports programmes.
Experience of teaching examination courses such as GCSE History or equivalent.
Working Conditions
The role is based at Telford Langley School, located in Telford, Shropshire, within the West Midlands region.
Full-time temporary position with expected working hours aligned to the school day, including occasional participation in after-school activities and meetings.
The postholder works primarily in classroom and sports facilities, requiring mobility around the school site.
Engagement with school events and extra-curricular activities may be required outside standard teaching hours.
