An independent specialist day school in central Shrewsbury is seeking a calm, resilient and compassionate SEMH Behaviour Support Assistant to join their dedicated team. This role is based within a KS3/KS4 Behaviour Centre
, supporting young people who require a nurturing, structured and consistent approach to overcome barriers to learning.

The school supports pupils with a range of complex needs, including Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs
, behavioural challenges, and associated learning difficulties. The focus is on creating a safe, supportive environment where every young person can build confidence, develop independence and achieve their potential.

You will be joining a specialist setting that understands every pupil has their own experiences, strengths and challenges. Through personalised support, the team helps students re‑engage with education, develop positive behaviours for learning, and work towards meaningful qualifications and life skills.

As part of the Behaviour Centre team, you will:
  • Provide 1:1 and small group support for KS3 and KS4 pupils with SEMH and behavioural needs
  • Support pupils with emotional regulation, conflict resolution and positive behaviour strategies
  • Build trusting, consistent relationships with young people who may have experienced trauma or disrupted education
  • Create a calm, structured and predictable learning environment
  • Encourage engagement, resilience and positive choices
  • Work closely with teachers, pastoral staff and external professionals to support individual plans and outcomes
  • Promote safeguarding, wellbeing and inclusion at all times
The ideal candidate will have:
  • Experience supporting young people with SEMH needs, challenging behaviour or additional needs
  • A background in specialist education, PRU, alternative provision, youth work, residential care or similar settings
  • The ability to remain calm, patient and consistent in challenging situations
  • Strong communication skills and the confidence to build positive relationships
  • A genuine commitment to helping young people succeed

Experience supporting pupils with autism, ADHD, trauma, anxiety or complex emotional needs would be highly desirable, but we also welcome applications from individuals with transferable skills from care, mentoring or youth‑focused roles.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
