Specialist Biomedical Scientist

We are looking for an enthusiastic, HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist, with relevant post‑registration experience to join the multidisciplinary team in Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry at The Princess Royal Hospital, Telford. The post is based at the Princess Royal Hospital.

We would like to appoint a suitably qualified Biomedical Scientist to assist with the provision of a diagnostic service and support the delivery of a 24‑hour per day, 7 days per week service as part of a 37.5 hour working week – including evenings, nights, weekends and bank/public holidays.

The post is based at the Princess Royal Hospital although candidates may be required to work at the other hospital sites.

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) is the main provider of acute hospital care for more than 500,000 people from Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and mid Wales. Pathology provides services to the Trust and Shropshire County CCG, Telford and Wrekin CCG, Powys Teaching Health Board, Powys Healthcare Trust, and the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital, amongst others.

The successful candidate will be expected to train in Haematology, Biochemistry and Blood Transfusion and to routinely rotate through all sections of the department.

Specialist BMS are required to undertake additional delegated responsibilities for example Quality, training or Health & Safety.

About us

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital (SaTH) Pathology Services are accredited to UKAS standards. The Biochemistry section is equipped with Roche Cobas 6000 analysers and Roche pre‑analytics and middleware. The Haematology section is equipped with a Sysmex XN and CN6000 analysers. Automated Biorad Equipment is in use in the Blood Transfusion Department. The department is an approved IBMS/HCPC training laboratory and continuous professional development is actively encouraged.

We are currently undertaking an equipment and LIMS refresh.

Person Specification Qualifications
  • BSc(Hons) in Biomedical Sciences (IBMS approved) or equivalent
  • Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
  • Membership of the Institute of Biomedical Science or equivalent professional body
  • Multi‑disciplinary Specialist Diploma or Specialist Diploma in more than one Blood Science Discipline or equivalent qualification e.g. BBTS Specialist Certificate
  • IOSH
Experience
  • Substantial practical experience of Biomedical procedures in a relevant discipline; gained through working in an NHS environment
  • Experience of Out of Hours working
  • Experience of analyser/equipment/IQC troubleshooting
  • Multi‑disciplinary working experience.
  • Experience of supervising junior staff and students.
  • Experience of using Pathology LIMS and a Quality management software.
Knowledge
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft software in particular Word and Excel
  • Knowledge of Quality Management Systems and Quality Assurance
  • Knowledge of Laboratory accreditation and compliance
  • Knowledge of Pathology IT systems
  • Experience of using Quality Management Software
Skills
  • Able to train and mentor others
  • Effective written and verbal communication
  • Able to prioritise own workload and work with minimal supervision
  • Able to pay meticulous attention to detail

Salary

£38,682 to £46,580 a year per annum/pro rata
