Job Summary

Within HMRC’s Chief Digital & Information Group (CDIO), the Enterprise Cloud Services (ECS) team is redefining and growing a diverse team of more than 90 professionals to improve our Cloud Centre of Excellence. The team covers architecture, development, service design, operation and governance.

The Role

As part of the Private Hosting team, you will work across platforms, channels and services. ECS provides private, on‑premise and public cloud hosting services and products, using a products‑and‑platforms approach to implement digital tax services and address technology debt.

You will work closely with the Service Owner, Analysts, Security, Data Engineers and Service Managers, supporting the Service Owner at the strategic layer of technical architecture and the Service Managers at the tactical and operational levels, in frequent contact with the external run partner.

The role is key to ensuring the Service can be delivered effectively, ensuring availability of policy, process, service overview and a service support model across the technical landscape.

Responsibilities

  • Lead technical discussions between internal teams and external stakeholders, clearly communicating concepts and driving continuous improvement.
  • Recommend and institute standard methodology, frameworks, design patterns, tools and reference architectures.
  • Author detailed engineering functional solution documentation and partner “how to” documentation.
  • Collaborate with others in the team to provide architectural viewpoints, ensuring requirements align with the strategic roadmap.
  • Maintain governance arrangements and standards for technical information, escalating impacts, risks and issues appropriately.
  • Work within the team to build and mature operational capabilities to meet delivery goals and validate that those goals are being met.
  • Contribute to a programme of continual service improvement across the wider service delivery function.
Essential Criteria
  • Ability to articulate different architecture layers (conceptual, logical, physical, deployment).
  • Experience governing high‑level and low‑level designs with full lifecycle management from requirements to support of operations teams.
  • Experience creating and governing principles, standards, patterns and methodologies.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, and the ability to deliver messages to stakeholders.
  • Strong knowledge of enterprise and software architecture, encompassing data, application and technology, including security.
  • Customer, colleague and supplier stakeholder management aptitude.
  • Troubleshooting and problem‑identification skills.
