Overview
The phlebotomist is a vital member of the clinical laboratory team, whose main function is to obtain patient blood specimens by venipuncture and micro-collection for testing purposes. Phlebotomists are employed throughout the healthcare system and in various settings. The demand for phlebotomy technicians has increased with the overall complexity of healthcare services and infectious disease risks.

This program prepares learners to collect blood specimens for laboratory analysis. Learners will gain skills to perform venipunctures safely and effectively. Classroom and lab work include terminology, anatomy and physiology; blood collection procedures; specimen hands-on practice; and training in puncture techniques.
The My Career Advancement Account (MyCAA) Scholarship may be available to eligible military spouses pursuing continuing education courses leading to certification for employment. Textbook costs are not covered by MyCAA and are the student’s responsibility (textbook for this course is $150). To receive funding, eligible military spouses must submit their Education and Training Plan (ETP) to MyCAA between December 5, 2025 and January 12, 2026.
Army Credentialing Assistance (CA) Program may apply for qualified individuals. Eligibility for Spring 2026: start date February 2, 2026 and end date April 13, 2026; ETS no earlier than May 14, 2026; CAR submission between November 4, 2025 and December 19, 2025. Traditional Army tuition assistance, GI Bill, and traditional college financial aid do not apply.
After completing this program, learners will be able to:
- Explain the steps in selected specimen collection procedures performed by the phlebotomy technician
- Explain safety procedures in the healthcare setting and during specimen collection
- Identify supplies and equipment used in specimen collection procedures
- Explain precautions when collecting specimens in special populations (pediatrics and geriatrics)
- Define quality of care and explain impact on patient care when quality and safety are compromised
- Describe anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and medical terminology related to phlebotomy
- Describe requirements of a successful phlebotomy career including traits, training, and responsibilities
- Explain how phlebotomists communicate in the healthcare setting (verbal, nonverbal, health record, computer systems)
- Identify common legal, ethical, and regulatory issues impacting phlebotomists
Option to take a leading national certification exam (CPT) upon program completion; exam voucher is the student’s responsibility.
Optional Volunteer Externship
Learners may participate in an optional volunteer externship with a local organization to gain hands-on experience. An Externship Coordinator will coordinate placement; additional health records, immunizations, drug-screening, and background checks may be required by the externship facility. Any expenses for the externship are the student’s responsibility.
