Police Communications Specialist (Dispatcher) - Continuous Pool
Job SummaryPosition serve as the initial point of contact for the District’s public safety mission. The dispatcher receives 9‑1‑1 calls and provides assistance to students, faculty, staff, and visitors. They convey vital information to the District, college constituents, and members of Public Safety, as well as to external agencies, often under stressful circumstances. The role dispatches for multiple Public Safety personnel across several colleges and coordinates assistance from allied agencies when needed.
EssentialFunctions
- 40% – Answer administrative and emergency calls for service; interact with and provide assistance to members of Public Safety, the college community, visitors, and first responders.
- 35% – Operate emergency communications dispatching systems and track public safety activities of staff using a computer‑aided dispatch (CAD) system for an assigned shift.
- 10% – Query, interpret, and enter data into the state and national criminal justice information system; maintain Level A AJCIS Terminal Operator Certification; track sensitive data such as protection orders, trespass orders, and registered sex offender notifications.
- 10% – Assist in administrative duties involving the auditing, editing, and support of systems including voice communications (radio consoles, emergency subscriber alert), CAD, records management systems, criminal justice information systems, logger recording equipment, emergency notification system, alarm notification system, and related training activities. May train and direct temporary or student workers and college dispatchers.
- 5% – Occasionally drive an MCCCD vehicle to deliver or pick up supplies, equipment, paperwork, evidence, or other materials; perform other duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- One (1) year of experience in a police communications environment, including work as a dispatcher for a municipal organization or a contractor providing dispatch services to a municipal organization.
- Typing, empathy, speaking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions required.
- Medium work incl. lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally or up to 20 pounds frequently.
- Work performed in an indoor office environment using phones, radios, and computer systems for extended periods.

- Include three professional references, preferably supervisors.
- Valid State of Arizona Class D driver license with acceptable driving record.
- Obtain Arizona Criminal Justice Information System (ACJIS) Terminal Operator Certification – Level C within six (6) months, and maintain certification with recertification every two (2) years.
- Comprehensive background investigation, including polygraph, fingerprinting, and psychological examination.
- Subject to pre‑employment and ongoing substance abuse testing.
- Minimum typing speed of 35 net words per minute.
