The Opportunity
Provide regional and/or multi-sector leadership to ensure transportation planning subject matter, technical deliverables, and programs are delivered with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards. Responsible for SME innovation and administration; ensuring corporate compliance with all Local, State, and Federal Agency regulations; and providing strategic and consistent direction to address current and future planning challenges in a large-scale and multi-faceted business organization.

- Provide proactive and strategic process and people leadership for the design, implementation, and administration of the planning discipline’s project and program involvement within the organization.
- Lead the most complex and largest scale transportation planning projects within the discipline, ensuring contributors know what they are required to do and by when, preparing and overseeing relevant project budgets, monitoring internal and external events, tracking hours and expenses, ensuring satisfactory performance and profitability, and supervising subcontractors, contract work, and employees.
- Drive compliance and accountability-at-all-levels with applicable Federal, State, and Local planning practices, approval processes, zoning laws, policies and regulatory requirements.
- Oversee internal vision and mission for the planning discipline, ensuring alignment with business operations strategy, and maintaining that certifications, accreditations, and client value ratings are continuously improved.
- Lead planning discipline meetings and continuing educational opportunities for area of responsibility, providing updates and recommendations to staff that ensure all appropriate measures are taken to foster innovation, development, and quality project delivery within the discipline.
- Serve as the planning discipline’s representative and liaison to a variety of external entities including Federal, State, and Local Agencies, Clients, Subcontractors, industry-related groups, and various government and community entities.
- Drive the overall long-term strategy, growth, and pipeline development of Transportation Planning work for WSP in assigned area of responsibility, with a focus on opportunities in all disciplines (planning, design, strategic consulting, and program management).
- Lead technical aspects of contract negotiation, presentations, and meetings.
- Provide leadership for proposals and project work scopes, pricing, budget, and performance metrics for the planning discipline.
- Interpret and summarize data, including reports and documents for complex projects and initiatives that result in sound planning and regulatory conclusions to minimize impacts to the community, population, local economy, and environment.
- Provide discipline leadership to multi-disciplinary project teams and contribute to providing high level strategic advice to clients.
- Provides performance guidance and leadership to assigned managers and staff.
- Develop high level business contacts and a client base for providing high level Transportation Planning, permitting, approval, and impact assessment services including identifying additional business development opportunities, and cross-selling of other WSP capabilities.
- Remain current in transportation planning subject matter, practices, regulations, and techniques.
- Collaborate with professionals from a variety of disciplines to provide “trusted advisor” service and future ready solutions for clients.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Transportation Planning, Urban Planning, Environmental Planning, or a related field (or equivalent experience.)
- 15+ years of Transportation Planning experience in a corporate environment.
