Responsibilities- As a Journeyman Electrician, contribute to the team by installing and repairing wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatuses, and distribution equipment.
- Plan new or modified installations to minimize waste of materials.
- Provide access for future maintenance and ensure wiring is safe, neat, and compliant with specifications and local electrical codes.
- Prepare sketches or follow diagrams/blueprints to ensure concealed wiring is installed before completion of walls, ceilings, and flooring.
- Measure, cut, bend, thread, assemble, and install electrical conduit using tools such as band saws, pipe threaders, and conduit benders.
- Pull wiring through conduit and splice wires by stripping insulation, twisting, and applying tape or terminal caps.
- Connect wiring to lighting fixtures and power equipment using hand tools.
- Install distribution apparatus (switches, relays, circuit-breaker panels) and secure them with appropriate fasteners.
- Connect power cables to equipment (transformers, switch gear, motors) and install grounding leads.
- Test circuit continuity with appropriate instruments (ohmmeter, voltmeter, ammeter) to ensure safety and compatibility.
- Observe installed equipment to identify hazards and determine needs for adjustments, relocation, or replacement.
- Repair faulty equipment and train lower-level employees on proper installation methods and equipment operation.
- Follow safety rules and regulations.
Work involves construction-site environments with temperature extremes, dust, fumes, smoke, hazardous substances, and loud noise. Up to 70% of the work may involve heavy physical tasks, including lifting 50–100 pounds. Must be able to climb ladders and work from scaffolds or aerial lifts; stand or walk for long periods; bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, squat, crawl; and work in awkward or confined spaces for extended periods.
Requires use of hands, arms, shoulders, and back, and adequate visual acuity and depth perception. May require use of an air-purifying respirator.
