Overview

Fire Alarm Technician opportunity with Facilities Development and Management (ASU). This position is based at ASU’s Tempe campus and may require working from other campuses depending on operational needs. The role focuses on installation, testing, maintenance, shutdowns, modification, and repair of fire alarm systems, fire sprinkler systems, and related equipment, including low voltage systems, security systems, and access control systems.

Responsibilities
  • Lead trades worker in an area of specialty to ensure proper installation, modification, and repair of related systems.
  • Analyze blueprints, schematics, and drawings to determine efficient installation and identify current systems.
  • Plan layouts and perform installations of new or remodeled alarm systems.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and inspections of fire alarm components and related equipment, including testing and part replacement.
  • Troubleshoot and repair alarms, sensors, system wiring, and related monitoring systems; maintain alarm networks and central monitoring devices.
  • Document operations and create reports on Fire Alarm Systems.
  • Ensure compliance with electrical and fire codes during project work; review subcontractor work for compliance.
  • Collaborate with other trades to complete projects and respond to emergencies as needed; participate in on-call duties and after-hours work when required.
  • Provide cost estimates for system installations to requesting departments.
  • Maintain and operate central monitoring systems and field devices (panels, detectors, audible/visual alarms, pull stations, etc.).
  • Coordinate with ASU Fire Marshal and other stakeholders to ensure inspections are completed.
  • Record activities for communication with coworkers and requesting departments.
Qualifications
  • Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma and three years of experience in the field OR any equivalent combination of experience and/or training from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.
  • Experience levels:
    • Fire Alarm Technician I (Entry Level): 2+ years of experience; NICET or equivalent certification; basic testing, troubleshooting & repair.
    • Fire Alarm Technician II (Mid-Level): 5+ years of experience; NICET II; advanced diagnostics, inspections, programming, compliance support.
    • Fire Alarm Technician III (Senior Level): 8+ years of experience; NICET III+; leads complex inspections, mentors team, on-call lead.
  • Other qualifications: NFPA 72 and NFPA 25 knowledge; ability to program and troubleshoot various fire alarm systems (e.g., Simplex, Edwards EST 3, JCI, FCI, Notifier); NICET II or higher certification preferred.
