Physician (Infectious Disease) with EDRP

The Central Texas VA Health Care System is seeking a Physician (Infectious Disease) to provide patient care for further growth and development of disease within the context of the emerging competitive health care environment. This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP).

The role involves maintaining active clinical privileges and practicing in both inpatient and outpatient Infectious Disease settings, supervising and instructing students, residents, and fellows, and participating in antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention initiatives.

• United States Citizenship:
  Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
• Education:
  
  Doctor of Medicine or equivalent allopathic/or osteopathic degree from a duly accredited institution.
• Licensure and Registration:
  Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in any U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
• Residency Training:
  Completion of an accredited core specialty training program leading to board certification (ACGME, AOA, or other approved residency with five years verified U.S. practice).
• Physician Resident Providers (PRPs):
  Eligible residents in approved programs are appointed as PRPs on an intermittent or fee‑basis. PRPs require full licensing, are not independent, and have a restricted scope of practice under supervision.
• English Language Proficiency:
  Proficient spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. §§ 7402(d) and 7407(d).
• Preferred Experience:
  
  Board certification in Internal/Family Medicine or related specialty; ability to provide compassionate, effective patient care; teaching experience with residents/fellows.
• Physical Requirements:
  
  Moderate lifting (15‑44 pounds), use of fingers, walking (4‑6 hours), standing (4‑6 hours), near vision 13″‑16″ to Jaeger 1‑4, far vision 20/20/20/40, color discrimination, hearing (aid permitted).

• Maintain active clinical privileges in inpatient and outpatient Infectious Disease settings.
• Obtain procedural authorizations based on qualifications and training.
• Supervise and instruct students, residents, and fellows with timely feedback.
• Serve as a backup for infection prevention and control; participate in antimicrobial stewardship initiatives.
• Engage in research-related activities as desired.
• Travel to other duty stations within the healthcare system when required.
• Perform administrative responsibilities assigned by the Chief of Infectious Disease.
• Work Schedule:
  
  Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

• Pay:
  Competitive salary with annual performance bonus and regular increases.
• Paid Time Off: 50‑55 days per year (26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays, 5 days paid CME).
• Retirement:
  Traditional federal pension (5‑year vesting) and 401(k) with up to 5% VA contribution.
• Insurance:
  Federal health, vision, dental, term life, and long‑term care (many can be carried into retirement).
• Other:
  Free malpractice liability protection with tail coverage; no employment contract; no significant restriction on moonlighting.
