Automation Engineer; Manufacturing

Overview

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Automation Engineer to join our team. This role is part of a greenfield startup, where projects will evolve from build and installation phases to production and continuous improvement. The ideal candidate will design, develop, test, and maintain automation systems that enhance efficiency, reliability, and productivity. Strong problem-solving abilities, technical expertise, and adaptability are essential, along with excellent organization and communication skills.

Safety is the highest priority. The Automation Engineer is responsible for ensuring all systems are designed and maintained with safety at the forefront, in full compliance with relevant regulations and standards. This includes performing risk assessments, implementing appropriate safeguards, and actively promoting a safety-first culture across all engineering activities.

• Design, develop, and implement automated systems and processes.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams (engineering, IT, operations) to assess automation needs.
• Develop scripts, tools, and frameworks to automate tasks, tests, or production systems.
• Create ground up automation systems; troubleshoot and resolve issues as needed.
• Conduct risk assessments and safety audits related to automated systems.
• Document automation workflows, processes, and system architecture.
• Stay up to date with industry trends, tools, and technologies in automation.
• Optimize system performance and recommend improvements.
• Ensure compliance with relevant industry standards and regulations.
• Collaborate with the maintenance team to develop and implement preventative maintenance systems that enhance equipment reliability and maximize operational uptime.
• Provide regular updates and progress reports to the VP of Engineering

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Computer Science, Mechatronics, or related field.
• Proven experience in automation engineering, controls engineering or a related field.
• Experience with automation tools and platforms (e.g., PLCs, SCADA systems, Fanuc robotics, vision systems, etc.)
• Understanding of control systems, robotics, or industrial automation.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Strong communication and project management skills.

• Master’s degree or certifications in relevant technologies (e.g., Certified Automation Professional).
• Experience using Ignition (or similar), Lynq MES (or similar), SAP, Power BI and CMMS systems.
• Experience with cloud-based automation platforms or CI/CD pipelines.
• Familiarity with machine learning or AI-driven automation.
• Knowledge of cybersecurity best practice in automation.
• Ability to perform hands-on tasks, including installation, calibration, and troubleshooting of automation hardware and software systems.
