In a fast‑paced manufacturing facility, the Fit‑up Welder reads and uses blueprints, tape measure, square, and an appropriate MIG welding machine to fit‑up, tack, and finish welding for mild steel products. Requires shop math skills, knowledge of angles, general shop practices and safety, the ability to recognize and measure various steel types and sizes, and good oral communication and listening skills.
Must use hearing protection because the noise from welding equipment exceeds OSHA limits, and can operate a forklift, overhead cranes, and hoists.
- Attendance – present at scheduled shift to perform assigned tasks.
- Comply with Shop and Department Safety Rules and practices.
- Safely operate MIG welding equipment, grinders, band saws, and pneumatic tools.
- Accurately read and interpret blueprints.
- Fit‑up, tack, and finish welding for mild steel and stainless‑steel products within close tolerances.
- Lifting up to 50 pounds and carrying for distances up to 25 feet.
- Other duties may be assigned.
- Hours per day – 6:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Thursday, with occasional overtime.
- Work breaks – 2 10‑minute breaks daily, 30‑minute lunch break.
- Work performed while:
- • Sitting – 5%
- • Standing – 95%
- • Kneeling, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling – 35%
- • Lifting – Light 1‑15 lbs frequently;
Medium 16‑45 lbs frequently;
Any lifting over 50 lbs requires assistance or mechanical device. - Carrying distance – Up to 25 feet frequently.
- Environment – Temperature 25 to 110+ degrees; fumes, dust, humidity, noise at or above 85 db.
- Shop math skills, including angles.
- Knowledge of general shop practices and shop safety.
- Ability to recognize and measure various steel types and sizes.
- Good oral communication and listening skills.
- Ability to operate forklift, overhead cranes, and hoists.
- Mandatory hearing conservation baseline and use of hearing protection.
